Controversial Muslim convert named dean at Sothwestern Seminary (Emir Caner)

FORT WORTH - Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary trustees elected a Muslim convert to Christianity as dean of the seminary's new undergraduate college.

Emir Caner, 34, was brought up to be a devout Sunni Muslim. His father, a leader of the Islamic Center in Columbus, Ohio, disowned Caner after he became a Christian.

Caner earned his undergraduate degree at Criswell College in Dallas, his master of divinity degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C., and his doctor of philosophy degree from the University of Texas at Arlimgton.

He was associate professor of church history and Anabaptist studies at Southeastern Seminary and associate dean of that seminary's undergraduate college.

Caner and his brother, Ergun Mehmet Caner, who recently was elected dean of Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., wrote several books on Islam, including Unveiling Islam.

In a sermon at the 2002 Southern Baptist Pastors' Conference in St. Louis, Florida Pastor Jerry Vines cited that book as his source when he declared Muhammad was a "demon-possessed pedophile" and claimed Islam promotes the killing of non-Muslims.

Some people just start busting caps without finding
out who the enemy is.

I hope this guy bought a good second chance vest, a steel neck tie might help too.

I think I read where Islamist kill people who try to convert to another religion.

Dang, if this is true (and the brothers Caner aren't just trying to assimilate "greatly" into America), it would help a lot when fighting the propaganda wars with people like Ibrahim Hooper of CAIR----

He (Hooper) always acts like any heathen American cannot possible understand the Koran or Islam if we say it is a religion that promotes death.

Before I get flamed about the parathesized remarks, I have read articles about Muslims that have said that the best way to destroy America is by insinuating Muslims into all of American life, schools, politics, companys, churches, etc., and then bring it (America) down using its own self against it....so call me just a little bit worried when I read these kind of stories.

The guy sounds like an educated man who made an aducated decision to convert to Christianity.

His book, Unveiling Islam leaves little doubt about his conversion.

Terrific, I will put the book on my reading list. Thank you---

If you and other freepers believe these guys, then I will defer and I will read the book. I just seems so opposite of what I have been reading and hearing--it seems like there are a lot more Americans that turn to Muslims in the news.

Thanks again---

Actually, having read the reviews of Unveiling Islam on Amazon, it appears you may be on to something.

ok, people here goes my two cents to the doubting Thomas:

For a bunch of protestants who by definition are not supposed to be creedal, Southwestern is definitely creedal (just try getting a job as a professor without signing the Baptist Faith and Message). Now if a group of people who are so concerned about getting a "bad apple" that they are willing to forego a basic protestant principle then do you really think that they would be careless enough to hire an undercover muslim?

I know of these two brothers well. They became convinced Muhammed was a power-hungry fraud, who stole about 80% of Al Quran from biblical sources, heretical Christian sects, and Jewish folklore. I have heard both of them speak. They are tremendous. He is not a Muslim, but an ex-Muslim who has been saved by faith in Jesus the Messiah.
