CA: Arnold scorned by backer over shift on redistricting

SACRAMENTO -- A day after Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger expressed his willingness to postpone the start of new legislative districts, a major backer of his ballot measure blasted the governor Thursday for retreating from his earlier demand for swift change.

Los Angeles businessman Bill Mundell said his committee has gathered 900,000 signatures to place the proposed constitutional amendment on the ballot, and added he is not interested in delaying its implementation past 2006.

"We believed the governor when he told us that the timeline was non-negotiable," Mundell said in a prepared statement. "The people want redistricting reform now. The people have spoken. The question now is: Is the governor listening?"

The governor shifted his position as a new poll showed only 45 percent of state voters approve of the job he is doing, down from 60 percent approval in January.

The ballot measure is designed to spur more competitive congressional and legislative elections by removing the Legislature's power to set the boundaries of political districts. A panel of retired judges would be given the task.

Administration officials said Thursday that Schwarzenegger remains committed to immediate reform, but is also willing to work with Democratic leaders if they negotiate and don't stall.

"The governor wants political redistricting as soon as possible," his spokesman Vincent Sollitto said.

The ballot measure is one of four proposals Schwarzenegger vowed in January to submit to voters in a special election. But earlier this month, he withdrew his proposal to reform public employee pensions, saying it needed more work in the face of criticism from unions.

The governor has previously said he would not accept a measure that delayed the implementation of redistricting reform beyond the 2006 midterm elections. But on Wednesday, he told supporters he is open to having his proposal take effect after the 2010 U.S. Census, when the next reapportionment is scheduled.

Earlier this year, Mundell spent more than $100,000 to launch Californians for Fair Redistricting, a committee helping to collect signatures for the redistricting ballot measure. Nearly 600,000 voters' signatures are required to qualify the measure for the ballot, and organizers typically gather many additional signatures in case some are invalid.

The initiative was authored by Sacramento conservative political activist Ted Costa, and is similar to the legislative version of Schwarzenegger's proposal.

"Why would we wait to fix what's broken?" Mundell said.

Like most GOP politicians and contrary to their campaign rhetoric, Arnold is not reformer. He's a caretaker of a liberal government.

The Spirit Of The Year Of Reform has evaporated. Sacramento remains broken.

So far, that is the case. Only ACTIONS ARE IMPORTANT, not what one says. Political TALK IS WORTHLESS.

>>"We believed the governor when he told us that the timeline was non-negotiable," Mundell <<

First mistake "We believed the governor"

Second mistake "the timeline was non-negotiable,"

In a politicians life everything is negotiable.

Compromising isn't a sign of 'no balls', it mean you want to be re-elected.
Tolerance means you don't care by who.
Compassion is just a way of getting donations from those you least expected to.
Leadership means I'll follow the dollar right off the cliff and take you with me if I have to!

They have an entirely different dictionary. The word principle sounds the same as principal, so they use it whenever it's appropriate to get some dollars from the wallets of those with dreams for a better America

Voter is interchangeable with Supporter and Sucker

Mundell just found out about being a 'One Night Stand'. Lets see if he's stupid enough to believe Arnies next shpiel. I wonder if he's going to hear, "Well, that'll take more money. Do you have any?"

If Arnold calls a special election for ANY of the ballot measures, that opens the door to them all. That means if he doesn't cave on his agenda entirely, he doesn't have any say in whether the redistricting initiative appears on the ballot in November. There are going to be some interesting ones coming up, including mandatory parental notification of an abortion for a minor, and the "paycheck protection" initiative, which would require express permission from a union member before a union could deduct dues for political purposes.

Arnie has completely botched his reform package by showing ineptitude, lack of carefully thought-out planning and piss-poor salesmanship. His first major screw-up was with pension reform, which would have been overwhelmingly passed by the voters.

They have an entirely different dictionary.

Correctamundo!! They speak in GLOBAL CODE. The words jump from the page anymore. Targeted taxcuts, mean, NOT FOR YOU, BUT FOR THE VOTES I NEED. SLIDING SCALE, means, No WAY IN HELL WITH THE MIDDLE CLASS BENEFIT...which also means, WE'RE OFF ON TO THE ROAD OF SOCIALISM.. That long-forgotten hit movie by those hilarious hucksters Ted Kennedy and John McCain. Where redistribution of tax payers money, savings and assets are the keys to delivering utopia for all, while delivering a much needed slap to the peasants that carry their gold plated bed, wash their feet, protect their castle, and swallow their pride for the privilege.
