Choice Quotes from a Conference on the Religious Far Right (NYC, April 29 and 30)
Posted on 04/30/2005 6:21:05 PM PDT by firebrand
"There's something strange about the folks running our country." --Joan Bokaer, founder of Theocracy Watch
"Christian Reconstructionism is Calvinism on crack." --Chip Berlet
"'Homeland'--who thought up that fascist-sounding term?" --Charles Strozier
He also calls the phrase Bush often uses to end his speeches--"May God continue to bless America"--"a nauseating trope," and describes Rove whistling "Onward Christian Soldiers" as "a chilling image."
"Right-wing intellectual is an oxymoron." --Skipp Porteus
He also said "Most Pentecostal ministers are shouters," and "The foundation of Christian fundamentalism is guilt and fear." Also, "The Jesus of the religious right is not the Jesus of the New Testament."
Mark Crispin Miller: "You can't call Ann Coulter a Christian. You can't call Sean Hannity a Christian. You can't call George Bush a Christian."
Many more outrageous statements that I did not take down as direct quotes. Comparisons with Hitler and Jim Jones. Lots of laughter when certain people are even mentioned, as if nothing further needs to be said about them--all their ludicrousness is evoked by their names: Fallwell, Robertson, LaHaye, Weyrich, Bush . . .
Why was I there, you might wonder. Looking for punishment? No, just getting the drift of how the Religious Far Left is approximating the act of thinking these days. One evening and one full day of this and I feel as though I have been rolling in pig puckey. Still, it is nice to know that they have no idea how to proceed and came from all over the country to demonstrate that.

Mark Crispin Miller: "You can't call Ann Coulter a Christian. You can't call Sean Hannity a Christian. You can't call George Bush a Christian." But they can call you a moron. And they'd be right. Wayyyyyyy right.

When they're reduced to name-calling, it doesn't say much of their intellectual heft. The Left's lack of ideas means it can't inspire people. You can't build a majority political movement upon seething rage and hate alone. When all is said and done, these folks are still a minority in the country.

I hear they're having the Conference on Imaginary Bogeyman next week, followed by the Conference for People Who Are Still Afraid of the Dark.
These anti-religious zealots are really something. They claim to oppose "organized religion" or the "religious right" or some variation thereof, and yet they always seem to create their own religion after a fashion. I mean, look at them. They absolutely have Churches (witness this looney convention in NYC, and let's not forget the Universities), they have their own ministers (the nutjobs that go to such conventions), they attempt to evangelize the masses just like other religions do (just look around here on Fridays), and most importantly they are firmly convinced that their way is the only true way to live out life.

Good job.
Ten years from now, one of those idiots will be running for some important office, and we can hang those quotes around their neck. The internet has a long memory.

"The foundation of Christian fundamentalism is guilt and fear." This is what drives the people who fear the Bible and thus the committed Christian. They cannot comprehend the truth of man's sin nature versus God's holy perfection. They cannot comprehend repentance. They cannot accept there are consequences for sin.
"The Jesus of the religious right is not the Jesus of the New Testament."
I have seen self-styled Christians say this kind of thing on FR. Their thinking is very similar to that of the folks above.

Except for the apostate Porteus, who are these people and why should we care? If this is what the left call identifying with "people of faith" let's applaud their effort and maybe they won't wake up.

These nutcase liberals would have hated the men who founded this country.

STRANGE HUH? I GUESS THOSE WHO FOLLOW THE CONSTITUTION ARE SOMEHOW STRANGE.
"Christian Reconstructionism is Calvinism on crack." --Chip Berlet
OK, WHAT?
"'Homeland'--who thought up that fascist-sounding term?" --Charles Strozier
CLINTON
He also calls the phrase Bush often uses to end his speeches--"May God continue to bless America"--"a nauseating trope," and describes Rove whistling "Onward Christian Soldiers" as "a chilling image."
I DID NOT EVEN KNOW ROVE COULD WHISTLE.
"Right-wing intellectual is an oxymoron." --Skipp Porteus
BOY, THIS STAMENT FROM A GROWNUP NAMED SKIPP.
He also said "Most Pentecostal ministers are shouters," and "The foundation of Christian fundamentalism is guilt and fear."
OF COURSE THEY SHOUT, BECAUSE, SOME PEOPLE ARE TO STUPID TO HEAR WHAT IS NEEDED.
Also, "The Jesus of the religious right is not the Jesus of the New Testament."
ANOTHER HUH? WHAT NEW TESTAMENT DO THEY READ?
Mark Crispin Miller: "You can't call Ann Coulter a Christian. You can't call Sean Hannity a Christian. You can't call George Bush a Christian."
AND WHAT SHOULD WE CALL THEM? AND YOU MARK WHAT SHOULD WE CALL YOU.
Sorry about the CAPS but for the life of me I can not figure out how to do italics for definition. Hey, that must be the oxymoron part of being a Christian.

The left tolerates religion only so long as it's used as a vehicle to advance a "progressive" agenda. Start talking about God and morality, and they get nervous.
The foundation of Christian faith the reality of God puts it in direct opposition to liberalism in all its forms, so they seek to defame and denounce it and replace it with their absurd ideology.
