China: Slingshot Patriots, A New Fad

Chinese Internet bulletin boards are abuzz with the news that 'Slingshot Gangs' have turned up in some Chinese cities, who exclusively attacks Japanese cars.

According to this story, 'Slingshot Gangs' operate mainly at night, shooting steel pellets to smash windows of Japanese cars. They even leave a message saying, 'the price for buying a Japanese car.'
The posts at bulletin boards list nine reasons why it became widespread, including (1) it is easy to get 'the weapon' (2) it is easy to organize a team (3) you can shoot from a distance, thus won't be easily spotted.
Unfortunately to  the owner of the cars attacked by these gangs, it cost  a lot of money to replace the broken windows.
Many Chinese posters are critical, saying, "Despite the good intention, it is not a honorable behavior. Making (Chinese) cars better than Japanese cars is the best policy."  "You should oppose Japanese not Chinese who bought Japanese products," "Many Japanese cars are produced in China and our government feeds on taxes imposed on them," "Before boycotting high quality foreign products, we should pay attention to the inability of domestic companies." On the other hand, there are many others giving support, saying, "It is rather extreme, but understandable," "the extraordinary method for extraordinary time."

In particular, many cited S. Korea when talking about anti-Japanese actions, saying, "Let's follow the S. Koreans who never buy Japanese cars," "In S. Korea, people rarely buy Japanese cars because they tend to get smashed a lot."

These is exactly the kind of behavior that prompted Spanish philosopher Jose Ortega y Gassett to pen his classic treatise on economics The Revolt of the Masses in the 1930s.

It's also worth noting that this is exactly the kind of behavior that made him recognize in the 1930s that Spain's time as a relevant cultural and economic force in the world was long gone.
