The Globe and Mail recently reported that two Canadian car makers won't be offering satellite radio in their 2006 models because the CRTC refuses to approve the radios for sale in Canada.
The broadcast regulator has steadfastly refused to allow two American satellite radio providers, Sirius satellite radio and XM satellite radio to operate in this country and will prosecute Canadians who dare to operate or sell these products in Canada.
We examine the situation and wonder, has a government organization that is prepared to prosecute Canadians for listening to foreign radio stations outlived its usefulness?

Satellite radio is not allowed into Canada because it has the potential to put Canadian commercial radio stations out of business. Canadian commercial radio stations derive their revenue from advertising sales and if their audiences decline because of satellite radio then they risk going out of business as advertising revenues fall.
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) under the guise of Canadian cultural protection has outlawed satellite radio to protect the interests of commercial radio operators.

That is nuts.
We need a Radio Free Canada, like the Radio Free Europe we had for those that were locked behind the Iron Curtain.
". . . because of satellite radio then they risk going out of business as advertising revenues fall."
If commercial radio went out of business in Canada, who would know? Canadian radio sounds like really bad Sunday night junior college radio in an American state without a major university.
I didn't realize that Canada had so much in common with Communist China.
Surely they can't Sirius.
Same as satellite TV coming from the u.s.(ie. Direct TV). This is so Canadain media companies friendly to the government can license certain feeds at discount prices, charge premium prices, and pocket the difference for basically no work. The government, in turn, gets to decide what channels are allowed...ie. no Fox News, which poisons the mind of the poor, pure, liberal Canadian.
Funny, because Satellite Radio is MADE for Canada!
Long drives, empty spaces, limited choices on the dial...
Hmmmmmmmmm.... this sounds like protectionism to me...
We either get into the free market or we dont.
Half measures just wont cut it. IMHO.
Actually Communist China is much more democratic than Canada. Do you know you have to pay to go to high school in China? Now THAT's anti-socialism.
the CBC FEARS the conservative talk channel.
Do they have Michael Savage? I wonder what Canada would make of him.
You'd think a country as big as the USA could do a better job of picking it's neignbors.
Apostrophe attack!!! Sorry.
What the hell is the Canadian Government afraid of?
LOL
The truth.
