Agreed. His comment to Thurmond was apparently a "rerun" of a comment he made in 1980. At some kind of rally he introduced Thurmond, I believe, by saying "if he had been elected we wouldn't be in the mess we're in." A throwaway line, and I won't argue it wasn't somewhat insensitive regarding Thurmond's record, but we WERE in one hell of a mess at that time! Carter was president, the economy was in the crapper, the Soviets were expanding and the Iranian hostage crisis was round-the-clock news! Lott's problem was that, recycled 22 years later, the context looked so different.
that's one reason I'm not in public life. You have to answer for what you say, every second.

Lott also stated that he won't accept criticism from Republicans for working with Democratic senators because "they're the same ones who threw me overboard. I'm free. I don't have to work with them anymore." What an idiot. Why does he think they threw him overboard? LOL He was totally worthless to the GOP way back then.

"Lott called the Senate a "dysfunctional institution." Well, that much he has correct.

Correct me here, but my recollection about the Lott incident was that his remarks were blown out of proportion. Me, too -- and wasn't the blowing out of proportion done by Dems and their henchmen? The Dems he want to cozy up to? It would be rational for him to say "A pox on both their houses," but to throw the Republicans on the mercy of the Dems is incomprehensible to me.

We could throw 'em ALL overboard and not be mistaken in any case. I just happen to like Republican liars better than I like Democrat liars. I'd just like to have a new crop of liars with which to work.
Don't go looking for virtue among any of the vultures. Lott is no worse than he was before. He's just more honest now.

He DOES realize his constituents are Republicans right? If he doesn't want to listen to critisism, fine, kick his butt to the curb for fresher more conservative blood.

That comment was an excuse to remove him, I believe Lott was doomed from the beginning the White House wanted him out and it was only a matter of time before he was gone, if he had not said what he said, at some point he would have done something else to get into trouble and the result would have been the same. I also believe many of the Republican's have been upset with mishandling of the impeachment process when he appeared to be more interested in his own self image then the impeachment process, which in the end endeared him to no one.
To: jneesy
the pubbies did nothing to help him in his time of need Yep. Bush and the rest of the Republicans are jumping through hoops for Tom DeLay, who's now down to using "everybody else does it too" to justify his ethical quandry.
All Trent Lott did was try to make an old man feel better on his birthday, and Bush acted like Lott was wearing a sheet and a hood.
And Frist is not even as effective as Lott was in moving legislation through the Senate.
Trent's got a secure seat, so he can free-lance a little if he wants to.

and wasn't the blowing out of proportion done by Dems and their henchmen?Of course. I wonder if he truly believed that being such an easy guy for Daschle to work with was going to save him. It's a mistake Republicans have made often and I'm hoping they are catching on. Frist seems to not be falling for Dingy Harry's ploys so far.

Call Lott now and tell him we WILL throw him overboard in the next election. Since you live in Singapore I doubt you'll do much of anything.

If you recall right after the 2002 elections and before his idiotic comments, there was much talk of getting a new leader because his leadership was just AWFUL. Hasn't improved any with Frist.
