Fred Phelps, leader of the "God-hates-faXs" movement, is planning on crashing the funeral of one of our War Dead on July 4th. Why? To spread his message of anti-homosexual SPAM in the most inappropriate way imaginable. There's a time and a place for everything. He's a publicity whore, as far as I'm concerned.
Here are snips from an earlier FR Report:
"A SF SGT E-5, James Stewart, will be buried in St. Petersburg, Florida on July 4, 2005. It's wholly appropriate that he be buried on our nation's birthday, because Sergeant Stewart gave his life for our country.... and all of us. He was killed in Iraq by a roadside bomb, call an IED in MilSpeak. IED is short for "Improvised Explosive Device." [snip]

It's my belief that whether that "Topeka, Kansas freak" shows up there or not, it's a good time we try to uncover just what that "freak", Fred Phelps, is about.
And while the clock is ticking, the anti-Christians are gloating, trying to compare Phelps with all Christian Conservatives. Fred Phelps is like a custom-made punching bag for the Left. And guess what? Maybe he is. Can you spell, "Al Gore?"
Fred Phelps went even further than I go [saying a lot, I have to tell you] , even further than Repent America goes, in calling sodomites to task, using our War Dead as props! He's stabbed our fighting forces in the back time-after-time. And I've been digging today to figure out why.
Here's what I've uncovered so far [and if you have sourcing that can confirm or deny, please contribute.]
1. Phelps was reportely a propaganda operative for Saddam Hussein.
2. He was reportedly a propaganda operative for Fidel Castro.
3. Fred Phelps was reportedly very tight with Al Gore, along with photographic evidence.
4. He was reportedly a narcotics abuser.
5. It's widely reported that Phelps was a shady lawyer, and several others his family have been practicing lawyers.

He very well may be -- I've wondered the same thing myself. Be that as it may, having seen his friendly folks protesting outside my very own church, we can say a couple of things for sure: a) their not rational; and b) they're the closest thing to nazis I've ever seen.
Sure thing.
...Then I entered the FR prior to registration....
We didn't have to register when FR started off. Anyone could post under any name. I was a bit of a rascal back then a few times, myself. I once posted as a troll named 'ash' and flamed at myself. In the middle of all the hoopla, poor ash came around and said, "I didn't post that." Not many people believed him. I think he was amused, though.
Nasty times, and I was actually as scheming as they were, I must confess. People often made different names to make it seem like you had five people disagreeing with you, when it was really only one nut. I never did that. Wanted to build up a single name, for the most part, one that would endure. But I did get carried away. Truth was coming at me 200 proof in a non-stop chug. Painful. And we weren't winning as much back then nationally.
Not to mention, I was a recovering liberal and thought the nation could be ripped apart. That's why militias were so big back then. It looked, to many of us, that the nation was on the verge of collapse.
I remember some militia guys came by and wanted to start a big stand-off with Clinton. I tried to talk them out of it, told them they'd just be playing into his hands. If they had any success, it would have meant martial law and ironically, more power for him.
They would have been terribly slandered by the Old Media, too. And the people would have been too confused to know they were on the peoples' side. Still couldn't talk them out of it. Then finally, I confess, I lied to them. I said, "You guys scare me more than Clinton." I didn't really mean it. Clinton had a contingency plan for martial law on 1-1-00. [Y2K.] I suspected he was going to cause fake chaos and enact it. But I had to stop them. So after that, they left. I hated to do it, but just like this Phelps guy, they went too far. Time was on our side, and I was one of those few who could sense it.
Thank God I was right and they were wrong. If I were wrong, if Clinton did attempt martial law without them taking action, back when the left had more media dominance, God knows how things would have turned out. I kept hammering away about that potential. I said, if we have martial law, it's because Clinton failed as a leader and should have resigned. I posted that every chance I had.
We had another problem: cross thread flame wars. I got into a three day flame war with 'val porter'. Val ended up calling me a 'nazi'. And the support I got after that skyrocketed for a while there, because people could tell I wasn't any freaking nazi.
What a time that was. Foul mouthed leftists were all over the place, trying to disrupt it. People could cuss a blue streak and get away with it. The leftists would team up on women and cuss so bad that not many women stayed around. That really, really ticked me off.
I was having fun a lot of the time, throwing political stink bombs at Clinton, skewering the illogic of the leftists, and getting into the general chaos. But a lot of people were run off. Men too. It was a much more hostile place than it is now. I tended to thrive off of that chaos, though. I let their own words hang them.

Thank you very much for this whole, great story. It reminds me of the 60's, 70's, being on the Left, in the half-assed way I was, etc. I have enjoyed reading it tremendously. In addition, I knew nothing about it. You might consider writing a book on the subject (just a thought). The reason it could work is, the archives are still there (on site) to refresh your memory.

I got carried away too, in my time. It's funny, I just read an article somewhere about someone who stole a book from a bookstore back in the day because reading Sartre made her feel she "had to" to be authentic.
At the University of Michigan, in 1969, I threw rocks at the police. It is quite impossible to explain why. It was in the middle of 2 or 3 consecutive evenings/nights of rioting (rioting in the day did not appeal to us).
It's not like there was even a reason for it. It started as a gathering on the sidewalk in the "student/business area" of Ann Arbor (probably State Street.) I wasn't there, but, you know, everyone was a dope-smoking hippy at that time, and people just started to gather on the street at night, and it became a "party". The thing was, it spilled over into the street and blocked traffic, which was illegal.
The real thing though was, it made the merchants who owned stores there nervous (even though the stores were mainly closed in the evening). They were concerned about losing their expensive investments. Of course, we thought this was sinister.
The police started to arrive, and put pressure on people to disperse. There was a crowd packed against a plate glass storefront window. (These things are incredibly expensive.) It cracked from the pressure.
No one was hurt, but that was all it took, essentially to set off a chain of events that led to a full-scale riot. People were beaten. I was tear-gassed. I threw rocks. You had to be there...I can only hope I did not injure anyone and I am very sorry for what I did.

I am with you 100% on this sort of thing. I view it as a constant danger to the Right, all these people with guns who imagine they can win the political battle with them. Also very bad are people who want to retaliate tit for tat against things like massive Democratic sign stealing.
Wrong. They would catch someone, and it would be on all media, 24/7 for weeks. When they do it (or even have the son of a Democratic bigwig slash tires of Republcan campaign workers, shoot a gun through a campaign office window in Tennessee, threaten to shoot Repub campaign workers in PA), it is not "news" and not covered.
We stand together on this one.

There are over 60 groups that refer to themselves as baptists. Some are Christian, some are not.
I'm glad a lot of the oldest archives were gone. Some of those moments are best left buried. But still, it's good for people to have a notion of the origins. I wish that more people understood the importance of free speech. They don't have a clue what would happen if they meddle too much with free speech.

You know, its a mixture. Some don't know, but the hidden drivers behind McCain/Fiengold do know. Their goal is an unfree society, albiet of a modern "European Socialist" style instead of the old Stalinist model. Of course, this is not what they say.
I've known a lot of Baptists in my life and Phelps is NOT A BAPTIST.
Like I said, he is a Baptist only in his warped, pea-sized brain. He is a waste of valuable oxygen.
Or claims to be one at any rate. His is apparently a "Standalone" church not part of any Baptist convention.

Posted on Tuesday, September 07, 2010 10:02:04 PM by Lou BudvisOn Sunday April 18, Westboro Baptist Church came to Gainesville. One of their stops was a liberal "Open doors, open hearts, open minds," church near us, so we took part of our Sunday Service time and went as a church to stand with them.
We have also learned that when you speak out about what God hates, you will be hated. We do not agree with all of Westboro's methods, but we admire their determination to find radical ways to preach the truth of the Bible, as we do. Most churches and Pastors in America try to stand on neutral ground. They are lost, weak and sick and need to repent.
