Checkmating Putin is chess king's gambit [Friends warns chance of assassinations]
Chicago Tribune via Yahoo! News ^ | 2005 Jul 5 | Alex Rodriguez

Garry Kasparov had nothing left to conquer. For two decades he reigned over international chess with the swagger of a Cossack and a memory that took on supercomputers. His peers vanquished and his patience worn thin by the politics of his game, the fiery, unpredictable chess legend yearned for a new arena.

This year he found one. Announcing his retirement from professional chess in March, Kasparov threw himself headlong into Russian politics, undaunted by its tripwires or its steely overseer, President Vladimir Putin.

In fact, Kasparov has made clear he sees Putin as his new archrival. Kasparov is virtually alone in Russian politics in calling for the dismantling of Putin's regime, and in the use of large-scale street rallies to try to get the job done.

Russian political analysts view Kasparov's endeavor as quixotic and ultimately doomed. Polls suggest most Russians are unaware of Kasparov's career move. Nearly two-thirds say they never would elect him president.

Kasparov is not accustomed to being the underdog, but it doesn't appear to faze him either. State-controlled television has ignored him since he announced his switch from chess to politics, so he has begun seeding grass-roots backing in Russia's provinces.

In mid-June he took his message of democracy and regime change to Kostroma, a small provincial capital along the banks of the Volga River. Last week he appeared in the volatile North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, recently besieged by a wave of bombings and violence spilling over from the 10-year separatist conflict in neighboring Chechnya.

Well, before he has chance to get hurt, it seems to be that he is not attracting people to be noticed as a candidate by the Russian people since the ignorance of the "state controlled" media, that he might not make a victory in the election anyways. If he is approaching the Communist Party, it seems that he is not worth for supporting for democracy of Russia. If he ever gains popularity, it will be likely for him to be assassinated or be accused by made up crime by Putin. I'll bet my two cents for that.

Geez, you shake hands with the guy and you have to count your jewelry and your fingers!

What's up, Vlad?

Remember in 2000 when whats-his-face resigned. (well it was 1999 in the US...2000 in Russia) I doubt that resignation was vouluntary. If true...Putin rose to power the same was as Saddam.

Which state controlled media? There are 7 national channels, one out right owned by the state, two with state minority stake holdings. There are several thousand newspapers, only a few are state owned. You keep repeating that old lie over and over again.

As for assassination, which of the last election's candidates were assassinated? Answer: none, but why stop with the facts, lies are so much better for an argument and since the only article you like about Russia is a negative one, need to do a little additional yellow journalism.

The reason the "liberals" lost the last Duma elections is that they had 8 years of power and did nothing but rob and pilfer the country. The people got tired of them, period.

Yeah, all he did was give us aid on Afghanistan, publically endorsed Bush, etc. Definitly need to get rid of a man who creates capitalist reforms, makes the Third Wayers and the Neocon(artists) nervous.

Much better a socialist and EUer like Blair or a second Barak like Sharon.

How can anyone who is "virtually alone in Russian politics" hope to have "large-scale street rallies"?

Precisely, exactly like Putin.

Oh! From BBC News

Monday, 27 March, 2000, 07:20 GMT 08:20 UK
Putin elected new Russian president

Election officials in Russia say that the acting President, Vladimir Putin, has won the presidential elections.

Mr Putin had gained an unassailable lead over his nearest rival, the Communist leader, Gennady Zyuganov, winning more than half of the total votes cast -- this was the threshold needed to avoid having to compete in a second ballot against Mr Zyuganov.

Mr Putin was more than twenty points clear of Mr Zyuganov, who has raised questions about the validity of the poll.

A BBC correspondent in Moscow said there was relief, rather than euphoria, at Mr Putin's campaign headquarters.

Earlier, Mr Putin told journalists that a first-round victory would give him a stronger moral mandate. He said his first priority would be to form a government and choose a prime minister.
