Marx Brothers: Does anyone know . . .?
Posted on 08/19/2005 7:09:50 AM PDT by Maceman
Does anyone know the name of the Marx Brothers movie in which Chico gives a dazzling display of comic pianistic virtuosity.
He does that thing where he hits the high notes with his finger pointed like a gun. ALso, later, Harpo performs the same tune on the harp.
I don't know the name of the tune, and since I can't remember the name of the movie (maybe Horsefeathers, where where Groucho is a college president), I don't have much other information to offer.
I want to show those clips to my young daughter, who is showing interest in the piano.
Any help in identifying it would be appreciated, as always.

Just Google "Marx Brothers Movies"...that should do it nicely. By the way, "Why a duck?"

Chico (real name Leonard), an accomplished pianist in real life, showed off his piano talents in most of their films. I would recommend "A Night in Casablanca" for a great example.

Why don't you just rent all the old Marx brothers movies and watch till you find it or go mad?

I thought it was pretty much all of them. Check out "A Night at the Opera".

Both of them played tunes in all of their movies.
My favorites were Harpo in "Go West" and Chico in "A Night in Casablanca" (Beer Barrel Polka)

Monkey Business?
Probably their best movie.

You nailed it. Of course, with the exception of "Duck Soup," any of their movies provides a showcase for Chico's piano skills. Also fun is the piano duet between him and Harpo in "The Big Store," although it's not one of their best films by any means.

Just take your pick...they were a formula but your best bet is Night At The Opera.

Chico has a big piano number in practically every movie they ever did. I can't think of one offhand that wouldn't fit your description.

He does that thing where he hits the high notes with his finger pointed like a gun. ALso, later, Harpo performs the same tune on the harp."Duck Soup", I think... but I only say that because I remember seeing Chico do the finger-pointing bit, and "Duck Soup" is my favorite Marx Bros. movie, and so it's likely that I'd remember it from that movie.
In other words, pure conjecture on my part.
