I was having a conversation with a friend and the topic came up about that MSGT in New Mexico winning the lottery. I remember hearing that the military had a wealth cut off point for service members, but I cannot remember what it is, or if it existed. I didnt need to worry about that since I was a poor guy in the Army.
There is no such animal.
A wealth "cutoff"? I can't imagine the Armed Forces having
a problem with such a situation,as long as the service member came by the $$ legally, paid all appropriate taxes, etc.
I think you can get an admin. discharge for financial reasons. But never heard of them taking away money.
Years ago my husband said that if he won the lottery then they'd make him get out. I thought he was joking.
You're referring to the fictitious "I Have Too Much Money To Be In The Military" clause of the UCMJ.
It does not exist.
Can't imagine there being any such thing. The rich and the privileged have served in the American military services since its inception. It was, and always has been, an honorable profession for anyone and everyone regardless of ones social or economic status.
I never meant to insinuate that the military will take money away, not even close.
My question is:
Is there a cut off of wealth for somebody serving in the military?
And by cut off I dont mean, after you earn so and so the military takes the rest, no what I mean is if you some how earned 10 million dollars would the military admin you out for financial reasons?
Oh ok, so it's a military urban legend then? :o) hehe
I've never heard of such a thing. If it were true, it would imply that only people that have less than X dollars could ever enlist.
Yeah, it is. I'd heard it repeated for years, so I figured it was probably true. Then in my Officer Basic Course, we were getting a legal brief by a JAG officer, and, for some reason, he randomly asked how many of us thought it was true. Then he stated that, without a doubt, no such thing exists.
Oh well...guess I don't need this lottery ticket anymore... :-)
I suppose that that could happen in the interest of 'good order'.One could see where if word got out about a big
lottery payoff,it could cause various kinds of problems
for him and those around him, just as can happen in civilian
life.
I served for 14 years and heard it mentioned occasionally. I never paid attention to it, but I know alot of people, myself included believed this "myth".
I guess it would make sense, since Elvis served, that there is no cut off for joining.
They would have kicked out Patton. He had more money than Ike,Bradley, and Monty together. Thats why he didnt put up with a lot of crap--he never had to.
"I remember hearing that the military had a wealth cut off point for service members..."
Are you maybe thinking of how military members are TAXED? Basic pay is taxed AFTER a certain level and it varies by state (which you claim as your "Home of Record" for tax purposes.) Additional allowances (housing, uniforms, hazardous duty pay, etc.) are not taxed at all.
His winning the lotter has nothing to do with his military pay, as far as I know. I had additional income when I was in the military; rental properties that I held back home and my Dad managed for me during various deployments, etc.
Well, I was also wondering about the ABC-XYZ-AC/DC-AM&FM in Tanzania. (shaking head)
