Teen Used Rope In Game To Pass Out
UPDATED: 8:32 am EDT August 30, 2005
CLINTON, Ohio -- Police say a 16-year-old from northeast Ohio has died from tying a noose around his neck and dropping to his knees to produce a euphoric sensation.
Jeffrey Patton died at Akron Children's Hospital Sunday, five days after hanging himself on a rope swing at a friend's house in nearby Clinton.
A 911 call was made Tuesday by a frantic teen from a home in Clinton. The boy told the operator that his friend, Jeffrey Patton, was unconscious after choking himself with a rope.
Patton had been doing something he had done in the past: playing a game in which the object was to pass out.
New Franklin Police Detective Mike Korach said two teenagers indicated Patton had done this before. Korach said the teens were unaware of what Patton was doing until it was too late.
The Northwest High School student used a rope from a tree fort to choke himself.
"To do this alone is, I think, a difficult thing, so he tried something, was not thought through, and he got himself into something he could not get out of without help," said Jeff's father, Dennis Patton.
Dennis and Tricia Patton want teens to know that life is precious and some risks may cost them their lives.
"The biggest problem is that kids don't think it's going to happen to them and they don't grasp the consequences and they're invincible at that age," said Tricia Patton.
The Pattons said their son was very friendly and easygoing.
They said their faith, family and friends will help them through this ordeal.

My local library had a web site for "kids and teens" that pointed to an American Library Association web site that pointed to a web page designed for kids and teens to learn about things including autoerotic asphyxiation (cutting off air to get a better orgasm). I complained and they said they would take action but they never did. Ultimately the ALA stopped pushing the web site.
Our doctor's son died this way. Apparently he was doing this regularly. It was so awful that the parents divorced. The doctor was never the same. It was their only child. He said, "The worst thing is how the body is discovered."
Many magazines and other sources have promoted the eroticism of this practice.
Cheech Wizard rules.
"Euphoric sensation" This "high" can't be all that great if they pass out. A few seconds high ??? Didn't they use to inhale fumes from cans years ago is this a new fad/ How about just plain old sex for that euphoric sensation.
These young kids really do alot of self destructive acts and their so called friends just stand by and watch. It's really sad.
too sad to joke about the death of a teenager. You must not be a parent or have ever loved or love a kid and understand that teens show poor judgement and sometimes it costs them their lives.
This "choking game" craze is sweeping the nation and attracting kids as young as 10. I have communicated with devastated parents who will live with this loss forever.
(Denny Crane: "Sometimes you can only look for answers from God and failing that... and Fox News".)
I remember kids "huffing" gasoline fumes back around the late 1960s.
The can of dust remover that I have in reach is labeled "NOTE: CONTAINS BITTERGENT TECHNOLOGY...."
And people say that Darwin was wrong.
Of course, that's a possibility. Many of such solitary deaths are ascribed to "accidental" strangulation.
Think of it as evolution in action. Or maybe it's an act of God or Intelligent Design or whatever alias they're going by these days
natural selection.
"I wanna see you CHOKE!!!!"
It's called autoeroticism. Unfortunately, kids and adults have been doing it for years, sometimes, as in this case, to deadly effect.
