At Least Ten U.S. Airports Face Closure Due to Jet Fuel Shortages Armbrust Aviation Group Press Release August 31, 2005 Airlines and oil companies are working on plans to supply jet fuel to at least ten U.S. airports that could be shut down due to a lack of jet fuel caused by refinery and pipeline shutdowns from hurricane Katrina. The airports in most jeopardy for closure include Atlanta, Charlotte, Ft. Lauderdale, Ft. Myers, Orlando, Tampa, Washington Dulles and West Palm Beach.
AAG has learned that ChevronTexaco and Shell had cargoes loaded prior to the shutdowns destined for Florida ports. However, with the Colonial and Plantation pipelines shutdown due to a lost of power it could be sometime for shipments to reach airports from Atlanta to Washington D.C.
With future supply uncertain, airlines are working on plans to allocate jet fuel at critically short airports. While some airports may have up to five days of supply we have to expect that we wont receive additional shipments for some time. We either run down to flumes or we try to make it last as long as possible, said one airline fuel manager. Today, airlines are working on plans to allocate fuel in hopes of extending available supply at problem locations.
Initial reports vary as to the extent of damage to Gulf Coast refining. But a longer term problem may not be refining infrastructure but providing shelter for refinery workers. One of our refineries is scheduled to be back up soon but our real problem is finding housing for our workers. Most of their homes are destroyed or under water. Unless we can solve the housing problem we will not be fully operational for some time, said one major oil company representative.
Wow...Atlanta especially is a huge hub.
Yes this is bad.
Colonial Pipeline Starts in Houston moves through all the Gulf refineries and goes through the Gulf Coast (LA, MS, GA, FLA) turns north and runs up the Eastern Seaboard terminating in NYC. This is THE major pipeline that brings gas/diesel/Jet fuel to the East Coast, Florida, GA etx. 100 Million Gallons a Day.
They have barely got the thing going since there is so little power through the major supply side of the line.
You are looking at literally running out of Gas in alot of places in the country. Local gas racks (where they load tanker trucks that go to your local station) carry maybe 2-3 days worth of fuel. If they don't get filled by the pipeline, they empty fast.
Crude Side-
90% of crude production is down and 80% of Natural gas production is down. The Gulf produces 20% of all crude and 25% of all Natural gas consumed in the country. Gathering lines are down as are the major crude pipelines in the Southern Louisiana area.
I'm thinking domino effect of refinery shutdowns pretty soon (ie a week). They only carry maybe 3-5 days worth of crude and if they run out of crude, no more gas gets made. which will crunch everything
Bad Bad Bad deal
This explains some of the panic buying in Atlanta. As always, the market senses what is coming.
The blows keep falling on Delta and Hartsfield...
Perhaps NOW -- someone will wrest control of the airport from the corrupt City of Atlanta's "city fathers" .
Semper Fi
Yeah. I was under the impression that Hartsfield wasnt just a large hub, but was the busiest. I seem to remember that it surpassed all others some years back.
I dont follow passenger air all that much so I may be mis-remembering things though.
oh c***. Just as I head into my fall travel season. *\:-(.
This could easily be the last nail in the coffin for one or more airlines.
I've been saying for quite some time that our refining capabilities in this nation were spread too thin.
This is seriously going to affect everyone... well almost everyone that is.
You just watch the profit reports for this and the next quarter. Oil company profits will set records.
more bad news.
How could they shut down Atlanta? Might as well shut down the entire domestic airline industry.
Look on the bright side. Once the ATL fuel runs out, at least Delta won't be facing huge fuel bills.
Doesn't UPS or FEDEX have a hub in Atlanta?
If you look at the maps of US oil pipelines, the Southeast US including Atlanta and Washington, DC are really only served by two pipes. Both of these are down for at least a couple days.
The midwest and northeast are served by pipelines that run through texas, but the Southeast looks screwed until the Colonial and Plantation pipelines are back on line.
What are we talking before supplies start to return to normal? Weeks? Months?
While search is a good friend, search after you've filled out the online post form is your best friend.
The time between starting to fill out the form and finally completing that form can be much more than 5 minutes.
agreed
Yes, but I don't remember which one.
from another thread...colonial is starting back up at about 25% capacity.
