Police Chief Says Thousands Trapped in New Orleans Convention Center
AP ^ | 1-Sept-2005 | AP

The New Orleans police chief says 15-thousand people are trapped in the city's convention center. And he says some are being raped and beaten.

Chief Eddie Compass says displaced tourists are "walking in that direction and they are getting preyed upon."

Compass said he sent eight eleven-man teams into the convention center. But as soon as the first team arrived, he said, "they were beaten back within 30 feet of the entrance."

Earlier, the city's mayor issued a "desperate SOS" on behalf of the thousands who are stranded at the convention center.

He also gave the go-ahead for them to march across a bridge to a dry area of the city and look for whatever relief they could find.

The thing is, we know more about their situation than they do...

I know. I am heartsick over this whole situation.

Military cannot engage in USA city with police powers until Marshall law has been declared

Who is this Marshall Law guy?

If he shows up, I hope he enforces Martial Law.

Well, I heard that they were having difficulty relocating prisoners, but I didn't hear that they'd let them all loose...

Bush could have been sending in helicopters from a very early stage repairing the levees. The is a bi-partisan screw-up of the first order. No politician can be left off the hook, nobody.

I havebeen struck by the number of people who have small cildren who chose to ride out the storm. What were they thinking?

And this storm mostly passed them by. If it ad hit NO dead on, No would be flattened.

I repeat. What were they thinking?

Those folks are up against something we all should be prepared for, human nature at its worst.

Be kind, but be armed and have a plan if it all goes south.

My wife's been on my ass for years to visit New Orleans and I've continually said "No." Always had a bad feeling about the place. Think I'm more right now than ever before.

This reminds me of what's happening in Iraq. 95% of the group is civil. 5% have no regard for peace or human life. Maybe this has more to do with human nature than religion?

Katrina wasn't born in the USA. She snuck over the border.

The "civic leaders" should face summary execution,...

You're insane.

What part of "MANDATORY EVACUATION" don't you comprehend?

They are talking about tourists. People who were there ended up stranded when airlines pulled out early and cancelled flights. Buses left and rental cars went early, none left.

Sorry you got flamed Cobra64.I believe that some just expected that everyone knew that people some were truly stranded. There just was no way to leave.

Yeah... what part of MANDATORY EVACUATION didn't they understand?

It's one thing to make it mandatory but if there's just no way to leave, what were they to do?

I read a thread last night where some Freepers had said they saw video or pics of brand new school buses. Underwater. Why didn't officials put people on those buses and get them out? They'd have saved their buses and people.

"Haven't ever been there, have you?"

Yeah, pretty much a regular day in NO.

I've walked around every major US city and there are only 2.5 that I felt kind of afraid in; NO, Detroit and Atlanta (the half as I was only afraid half the time). NO has always gotten top honors.

If the 'cops' he sent were anything like the ones we saw filling their shopping carts at Long's and K-Mart, I can see why!
