Police Chief Says Thousands Trapped in New Orleans Convention Center
AP ^ | 1-Sept-2005 | AP

Posted on 09/01/2005 2:49:12 PM PDT by Fitzcarraldo

The New Orleans police chief says 15-thousand people are trapped in the city's convention center. And he says some are being raped and beaten.

Chief Eddie Compass says displaced tourists are "walking in that direction and they are getting preyed upon."

Compass said he sent eight eleven-man teams into the convention center. But as soon as the first team arrived, he said, "they were beaten back within 30 feet of the entrance."

Earlier, the city's mayor issued a "desperate SOS" on behalf of the thousands who are stranded at the convention center.

He also gave the go-ahead for them to march across a bridge to a dry area of the city and look for whatever relief they could find.

I agree. And I DO think this is a vision of things to come. In any given incident, the authorities can handle things. But sometimes, the citizens might find themselves on their own for lengthy periods of time, and God help them if they aren't prepared.

Congress needs to lift Posse Comitatus prohibition in this case. In fact, I think Congress is the only one who can under Article II. Maybe if they can pass the spending bill tmo, then they can allow the military to move in and take control of New Orleans.

Yeah, I think the gangs need to be taken out. Shoot to kill. That, unfortunately, is the only way to stop this.

Yes...there's no one dying from dehydration, as we speak, is there?

Going on three days now.

But helicopters are brought in with sand....

not fresh water.

Good thinking on your part.

>I just heard a National Guard commander on tv say "we don't shoot people for stealing televisions in this country".

Remember the lines from "The Hill"

"What are you going to do, Sergeant Major, shoot all us rioters?"

"No, just every fifth man!"

End of riot

Had lawful authority made a highly visible show of force at the onset of all this, much of this violence and idiocy would have been avoided.

I'm a moderate on this issue. I wouldn't advocate shooting someone for looting food or water from the Winn Dixie, but at some point (which has now been passed) you give the security personnel live ammo and authorization to use it to protect the hospitals and the lives and well being of the innocents.

If there's a gaping hole in the front of my house due to natural disaster, come on in and try to take the T.V. See what happens. ;-)

The governments of the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana have known for decades that this could happen, but they did not adequately prepare for it.

Now they blame Bush, who has had only a few years in office and is running the WOT as well as the rest of the country.

I get sick of people blaming the President for what the local and state governments should have been prepared for.

Of course, it would have been very expensive, but look at it now.

I feel terribly sorry for most of those trapped in NO, but so very many of them are there by choice. They did not trust the untrustworthy media and the politicans.

I think most do not understand the extreme logictics problems of getting people and materiel into the city. It would do no good just to put people in without the supplies required to do be effective.

When we do send in troops, the people do not want them. I heard one man say that if we send in NG troops to the Convention Center, there will be a gun battle.

What does the government do? They are wrong no matter what they do.

Having said that, there is an incredible number of people who are selflessly helping those in need. May God bless them.

I would say that what you see before your eyes is the true nature of uncivilized people controlling the few civilized people left in a natural disaster.

I think we are seeing Rosseau's natural man in his natural state, left to do as he pleases.

"There's a disconnect between him saying "the food and water are being distributed right now" and live cameras showing nothing of the sort."

Yeah. I'm sure those three or four live cameras provide all the coverage you need to make that assessment. The guy is obviously lying. But then, I guess several reporters are too, because the ones who have been in or around the Superdome have said people are getting food and water. And reporters further away from the Superdome are showing people recieving food and water. I also heard earlier today that there are no buses showing up at the Superdome today, and no National Guard troops there either. But later live cameras showed a very significant presence of both. Maybe we all need to realize that we are not getting the whole picture watching breathless live reporting from cable news.

Doctors appealing for help

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Doctors at two public hospitals in New Orleans have called The Associated Press to plead for rescue. The physicians say they are nearly out of food and power and have been forced to move patients to higher floors to escape looters.

Doctor Norman McSwain says he and his colleagues at Charity Hospital have turned to The AP as a last resort. McSwain says he tried calling the mayor and the governor, using any “inside pressure” possible, to no avail.

McSwain says there’s minimal water. The food amounts to fruit bowl punch. The scene is similar at University hospital.

Another doctor, Lee Hamm, says somehow the two public facilities have been forgotten -- or ignored.

Levee Repairs under way

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Army Corps of Engineers says a breach in the New Orleans levee system will be repaired by day’s end.

But a second section will take longer because of difficulties ferrying equipment and material to that part of the city.

Corps commander Carl Strock says the focus is to stop the water from entering the city so that draining can begin.
