Unbelievable. Public education is a joke. Teach them to put condoms on cucumbers but don't teach them the history of the U.S.. Make sure they all have high self-esteem but don't worry if they can't read or solve simple math problems or write a paragraph. Just so long as they feel good about themselves and are free to express themselves.

I signed the petition.

Well, of course we can't have this type of teaching in our public schools. We do not want the children to believe that we can have an armed citizenry overthrowing a tyrannical government, do we? < /sarcasm >

Discovery learning: an approach to instruction through which students interact with their environment-by exploring and manipulating objects, wrestling with questions and controversies, or performing experiments"

That's fine for science class or any teacher who WANTS to teach that way, but why is this teacher being forced to use this method? It sounds ridiculous for a history class.

TEACH AMERICAN HISTORY

Teach that the Muslims were among the first Slave traders, walking the Africans East out of Africa.

The seafaring nations then took over the slave trade,( Portugal, Spain, Holland, England, France,) transporting the Africans to the new world Sugar producing areas, mainly the Caribbean, Brazil and north South America.

The united States, as such, had a very small part, if any, in the actual selling and transportation of Slave from Africa.

5 percent of all the Slaves that came to the New World arrived in the United States.

The perception, as taught in the American schools is that the United States is totally responsible for the Slave Trade. This perception is far from true History. The United States was basically Abolitionist from its inception, making slave trade illegal in 1806.

This is obviously not how history is taught in the United States when you see minorities Adopting the Muslim religion and taking the names of the most egregious Slave traders.

The very purpose of 'modern and progressive' public schooling is to destroy the student's sense of history and self.

Socialism requires sacrifice!

In the high schools in my county, US history starts with the Jazz age and the unions throwing over the bosses.

Joe Enge should see if he can join forces with Leonard Magruder. They will do well joining forces.

I remember in school they would always start out with early American History then stop just at the Civil War. I got so annoyed with this that I wound up with this weird memory lapse about histry from that time for years. When I taught my own children I actually taught them the stories behind the history, rather than just the boring facts I had learned.
On another note, I was in a teacher supply store when I overhead one teacher talking about what she was supposed to teach in her classroom. She said the district wanted her to teach multicultural politically correct crap. She was telling her friend that she pulled out a copy of the state guidelines and told her boss she was required to teach about American Heroes and that is what she was going to do.

The Carson City school board email system has either been overwhelmed by the sheer volume of petitions sent in defense of history teacher Joe Enge (over 5,000 by late this morning), or the district has intentionally shut the system down.

They can run, but they can't hide.

Here are the phone numbers to call should you care to continuing showing our support for Mr. Enge's desire to teach ALL of American history to ALL of his students.

Carson High School Principal Fred Perdomo (775) 283-1600 Ext. 3

Carson City School Superintendent Mary Pierczynski (775) 283-2100

Carson City School Board President James Hukari (775) 841-0525

It is critically important for these school administrators to know that what they're trying to do behind-the-scenes is no longer "secret" and that Joe Enge is no longer fighting this fight by himself. I would, however, ask that phone calls be polite but firm; adamant but professional. We do not want to give these folks the ability to undermine our message by attacking the messengers.

Any high school around here includes a big unit on the colonial period, as they did when I was in junior high and high school. My brother spent a whole quarter on the Constitution alone last year as a junior (and no, it wasn't lefty-oriented).

Okay, a disclaimer: no one here is any more down on public schools - especially in regards to their treatment of history - than I am.

BUT

This is misdirected or at least ill-informed outrage. I agree with the academic freedom angle - that this teacher needs to be allowed to do what is working for him. I agree that more of my fellow history teachers ought to do so. However, the idea that there is some scheme demonstrated here to ignore the founding period isn't really correct.

Now to be sure, I've no doubt a lot of educrats and union leaders are perfectly willing to do so...but you can prove it from this article.

In point of fact, public schools have been teaching Early U.S. History (Discovery through Civil War Era...usually about the end of Reconstruction) in the 8th Grade and Late U.S. history in the 10th grade. Probably a good many of us were taught history on that pattern.

I have long advanced the idea that state boards should shuffle the order of Social Studies classes so that both halves of U.S. History were required High School credits. But it's been done wrong like this for a long time, it is not some new and devious scheme that just appeared.

Ideally, one ought get Modern World History (from the Reformation) in 9th, Early U.S. in the 10th, Modern U.S. in the 11th, and Government/Economics in the 12th.

Precept upon precept.

I'm not saying don't speak up for this guy...but make your protest an informed one...some things are dictated by the state board and the local principle has limited authority to get "outside the box"
