"Do you think this qualifies me to conclude that the term hillbilly is and was used as a perjoritive? "

Hillbilly is and was used by ignorant people as a pejorative.

And you said hillbilly was "...another perjorative (sic)...."

Yes, it is a great place. There are Eagles to watch even if you don't fish or duck hunt. I both hunted and fished there from the mid forties until the mid fifties.

I was reading about the eagles at the link I posted to you.

I was aware of their protected status, but I was surprised to learn that even to pick up and keep an eagle feather that has fallen to the ground is against the law.

While I admire and respect that most noble bird, I found that to be just a bit extreme.

Growing up in Virginia as a boy, I still remember an eagle's nest at the top of a tall tree at Lake Smith. It was such a treat to see an eagle land there or take off. They are so magnificent in flight.

...George Clooney, writer and director of the rebuttal, claims he was driven to make the movie "Good Night, and Good Luck" because "a book came out about how great McCarthy was."

Q: Ann Coulter's "Treason"?

GC: Yes.

That would, of course, be THIS book:

And despite all those "double-sources," in addition to getting the big facts wrong (about America and about the Soviet Union), Clooney got all the little facts wrong, too. I guess he borrowed some of Al Franken's "fact-checkers."

This must be her David Brock moment. She'll be going Arianna's route any moment now.

I have lived in Virginia since 1958, with only two short periods out of state. I have to admit I don't know where Smith Lake is. I do know where Smith Mountain Lake is.

Putting aside all the chit chat, McCarthy was a reckless, demagogic drunk, whose incompetence and ineptness with the facts, and penchant for overstatement, was the ultimate elixir for the Left, from which it profited handsomely until Reagan sucked the air out of it all. The attempt to rehabilitate McCarthy won't get a pass from this quarter.

And, for those of us who do not patronize George Clooney movies...
...and hence, do not understand the "Danny Ocean" reference made in the title of this article...

Lake Smith is in what is now Virginia Beach. When I was a boy it was Princess Anne County.

If you're familiar with the Beach area,Lake Smith can be seen from Northhampton Blvd. between Diamond Springs Rd. and Independence Blvd.

...McCarthy was a reckless, demagogic drunk, whose incompetence and ineptness with the facts, and penchant for overstatement...
It is hard to know how much of that "classical" characterization of Senator McCarthy is liberal myth, and how much is grounded in reality, IMHO.

See also, from www.frontpagemag.com:

FP: Ms. Coulter, I completely agree with you on Ronald Reagan but, with all due respect, how could you possibly admire Joe McCarthy?

He was a hideous character. I don't think you can find many individuals more anti-communist than myself, but I detest McCarthy for how he discredited anti-communism. I can't think of anyone else in America that did so much damage to the anti-communist cause. What exactly do you see in McCarthy? Yes, he fought the right enemy, but the way that he fought it was extremely counter-productive. He armed our liberal enemies with powerful ammunition against us. What is your thinking here?

AC: I notice that you have just reeled off a slew of insults without a bare hint of a fact. And for good reason -- actually for no good reason. You're interviewing me, you should have read my book. Until Treason, that's all it ever was with McCarthy. Portraits of Kathy Boudin, Che Guevara, Ted Bundy, and Joe Stalin are more nuanced than portraits of McCarthy.

He is the only person in history for whom, apparently, there is absolutely nothing good that we can say. No nuance, no good side -- just invective, fake facts, myth, and anger. It's amazing that guy ever got elected to anything! I wrote my book, I made my case, and people decided not to argue with me on the merits. So now I guess we're back to fact-free invective against McCarthy.

When you start to sound like Molly Ivins talking about George Bush, you might want to entertain the possibility that you are a few tweaks away from the dispassionate truth.
