It appears the Greeks aquired the Tor-M1 a few years ago:

"I'm amazed Russia can sell any weapons as their equipment was totally ineffective for Iraq."

I dunno, RPG7s, AK47s, and 88mm Anti-tanks shells seem to be mighty effective in the hands of the insurgents.

Hmmm. It appeared from news over the past year or so that Russia and Iran were happy with their Caspian energy agreements and oil and gas pipeline deals. Russia needed more routes to the south.

As Bush would say, or words to that effect, "those who support the terrorists are the same as those very terrorists who commit the acts of aggression and violence."

If these weapons are used, the world could be thrown into a larger war if the state(s) Iran uses these against are already in dire political straights with Russia over the sale to start with. The agrieved states that come immediately to mind are Israel and the USA. Russia, France, Germany, Italy and Brazil should all be wary of their actions supporting Iran should this Islamic State use these weapons....

Very nice analysis, mate! Putin is steps ahead of his government-leading colleagues in other nations.

Couple of quibbles (minor). Not sure at all that the US will even attempt to do anything about/to Iran **until** they pop a nuke; it's hard to see where the US gains from pre-empting the mullahs, and the antiAmerican Left would go even more berserk than they have done to date. I hope I'm wrong in this, very wrong, but it appears to me that the only trigger event for taking down the mullahs will be the loss of an American city.

And, just in the interest of getting hard facts accurate, the Russian sovereign default occurred in 1998, late July or early August, not 1997. Can get the precise date for you if you want. It was one of the final nails in LTCM's coffin. I had spent the entire previous 3 months trying to get assorted banks to take the other side of a VKO-rouble arbitrage that was a stone lock...alas, to no avail. Didn't make a penny from one of the most obvious bond plays in history (sigh).

Good catch. I was about to type "Asian Currency Crisis of 1997 led to Russian default in 1998" but edited for brevity in error.

(Though I'm still baffled by that Mexican Peso bailout backstory back then)

''A contract for the delivery of air defense Tor missile systems to Iran has indeed been signed,''

Immediately following the announcement, the Pentagon issued this statement:
"A contract for the delivery of shoulder fired surface to air missiles to Chechnya has indeed been signed," Rumsfeld said in comments broadcast by Fox news, without giving further details. (wish)

Here's the connection.

The service of press of the official agency Rossoboronexport in charge of Russian exports of weapons, joined by AFP, affirmed that it "did not have information" in connection with this contract.

The contract "will not violate any international engagement of Russia", because Moscow had left in 2000 a secret agreement with Washington known under the name of

>>>>>GORE-CHERNOMYRDINE

protocol which limited the Russian deliveries of weapons to Iran, underlines Vedomosti.

The Tor systems are "a weapon of defense" and "represent a danger to the United States only if this country attacks Iran", raises a Russian expert of the magazine Exportations of weapons, Mikhaïl Barabanov, quoted by the newspaper.

Iran in particular seeks "to defend its nuclear thermal power station" that Moscow is building in Bouchehr, bus "Israel had affirmed that it examined the possibility of launching strike preventive against this site", explains a professor of the Russian Institute of the International relations, Sergueï Droujilovski, quoted by Vedomosti.

Washington shows Teheran to seek to obtain the nuclear weapon under cover of civil activities.

The purchase of the systems Tor M-1 could cost Iran more than 700 million dollars, according to another expert, Dmitri Vassiliev of the Center of analysis of the strategies and technologies.

Apparently that horrible school bombing/killing earlier this year wasn't enough proof to the Russians that terrorists live in Russia.

I don't know what will wake up the rest of the world but the Russians appear to be desperate for the money and they'll sell their own country off to get it.

Meanwhile...this hardly helps us since we have many troops in the middle east. It would only take one missile armed with nuclear material to make a dirty bomb. The Russkis ought to be hogwhipped for this. The Iranians could use those SAMs to bring down Israeli or American fighters in a heartbeat.

God help us all.
