Still, there are those thorny issues that make the Republican Party a tough sell for many Jews: opposition to abortion and stem-cell research, efforts to weaken church/state separation and the conflict in Iraq.

Many Republican supporters of Israel see support of the Jewish state as an explicitly religious position, which is why they hold it. Why do non-religious Jews support Israel anyway?

And since when has the war in Iraq become a "chr*stian right" thing that makes Jews uncomfortable? Someone should tell this to Pat Buchanan.

In addition many Orthodox Jews are right to life themselves, but I don't think that there are a large proportion of the Orthodox in California.

Why do non-religious Jews support Israel anyway? One answer is that Israel offers Jews around the world of all stripes a national homeland, i. e., a possible refuge from persecution and discrimination in other countries. History has shown that such persecution and discrimination may seriously impact the lives of all Jews in those countries. As I'm sure you know, the vast majority of early Zionists were non-religious Jews.
