PAPER: Sen. Kennedy was member of all-male club Wed Jan 11 2006 22:40:10 ET

Conservative activists are eager to point out that Sen Ted Kennedy was on shaky ground accusing the Judge Alito of associating with people opposed to the inclusion of women in private institutions, the WASHINGTON TIMES is fronting on Thursday.

The eight-term senator belonged to an all-male social club -- the Owl -- at Harvard University. The Owl refused to admit women until it was forced to do so during the 1980s, according to records kept by the HARVARD CRIMSON, the student newspaper.

A Kennedy spokeswoman said it was an entirely different matter.

"No one can question Senator Kennedy's commitment to equality, justice and civil rights," said Laura Capps. "What he was part of was a social club, not a radical group pushing a radical agenda."

Anyway, she said, even though women were admitted to the university during Mr. Kennedy's tenure, they weren't fully integrated to the campus until much later.

In related news, Hillary Clinton went to a university that refused admittance to males.

BIIIG difference there.

Kennedy is a liberal. Alito is a conservative.

See the difference?

It's amazing how Kennedy's spokesperson can say he should be immune from criticism after his dispicable behavior yesterday. Kennedy's a murdering, drunken old fool and I have to believe that even some of his liberal friends in the senate are worried that he's finally gone senile. Murdering an innocent woman and years of hard drinking will do that to a guy.

Heard he was expelled from the club when his stomach interfered with a gender check.

This is what Alito should go back at Kennedy with.
Senator Kennedy, since you are asking about my college days, why you cheated at Harvard and were expelled?
How did you manage to get re-admitted to Harvard? Was it your family's money and clout that greased the wheels?
Senator Kennedy, after you saved your skin and left Mary Jo Kopechne to drown, you did not report the accident for ten hours. Do you consider yourself a feminist?
Senator Kennedy, is it not true that you caucus in the senate with a man who once held a high rank in the Ku Klux Klan?**

I think the Senate was an all male club when he joined. All white, too. Come to think of it, isn't it all white even now?

Shame on Teddy.

As far as I remember, the journalist, Roger Mudd, was the only one to confront Kennedy about Chappaquidick.

Final clubj

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

A final club is a single-sex undergraduate social club at Harvard College. There are currently ten such clubs at Harvard. The male clubs are the Fox, Spee, Owl, Delphic, A.D., Fly, Phoenix-S.K., and Porcellian; all were established a century or more in the past. The female clubs are the Bee and the Isis; they are fairly new - the Bee was founded in 1991 and the Isis was founded in 2000. Almost all of the clubs have a privately-owned clubhouse.

Final clubs are not to be mistaken for fraternities or sororities. None of the final clubs provide housing to their members, nor are they affiliated with national organizations (anymore, that is -- the Spee began its life as Zeta Psi and the A.D. and Fly as Alpha Delta Phi; other remnants remain as well). Long affiliated with and supported by Harvard, the male final clubs were ordered in 1984 to either go coeducational or go private. The clubs privatized and since then have maintained themselves beyond university regulation.

Historically, however, there was far more differentiation among the clubs. Harvard College freshman hoped to join the Hasty Pudding social club. Going into their senior year, aspiring students hoped to join either the A.D. or Porcellian, the original two final clubs. In the interim, their hope was to gain admittance to one of the "waiting clubs," as the other clubs were known.

Each fall the clubs hold "punch season" where aspiring sophomores and juniors try to get "punched," or elected as new members of the clubs. The clubs have an undergraduate membership of around fifty apiece, amounting to a small percentage of the undergraduate population. The clubs have varying restrictions on exclusivity. Some final clubs often hold parties and open their doors to women and occasionally even male guests of members. Others, like the A.D., have only in recent history opened their doors to female guests of members. Still others, like the Porcellian, never allow non-members in -- in the Porcellian's case, this means that they never allow non-members past a small room by the entrance called "the bicycle room."

The final clubs are a permanent point of controversy at Harvard College, eliciting protests from women's organizations and those on the political left, as well as many moderate students concerned with equality and anti-elitism. Such controversy has included protests, boycotts and other tactics, as well as yearly debate in the student newspaper, the Harvard Crimson, that tends to come around punch time. The clubs, however, weather the protests and debate both because they are private institutions not accountable to student opinion or the administration's anti-discrimination policies and their promise of social ranking and professional connections are highly coveted.
