Streets of San Francisco overflowing with guns

High murder rate attributed to large supply of firearms

There are more guns than ever on the streets of San Francisco — particularly in the hands of young people — leading to a doubling of gun murders over the last five years, according to the police department.

The number of homicides by firearms jumped from 39 in 2001 to 80 in 2005 and a handful of other indicators, from shootings to the number of guns seized by police, all point to a greater level of gun violence in San Francisco.

The new statistics come to light as city officials grapple with The City’s bloodiest year in a decade that resulted in 96 murders in 2005.

Eighty-one percent of those homicides were committed with a gun, a 10 percent increase from the year before, according to police. There were 316 shootings in 2005, which is up from 260 in 2004.

About 60 percent of San Francisco’s murder suspects and 57 percent of its victims are under 30. More than 60 percent of shooting suspects in 2005 had prior arrests, according to police.

San Francisco police Capt. Kevin Cashman, who appeared before a special Board of Supervisors committee Monday to address the murder rate, blamed the increase in gun violence on gangs and the availability of guns on the streets. However, law enforcement officials did not provide any indications of why there are more guns in San Francisco.

Cashman said the police had seized nearly 1,100 guns in 2005 and had increased the number of cases for federal gun prosecution from 77 in 2003 to 133 in 2005.

District Attorney Kamala Harris, who also appeared at the hearing, said her department did not have an official policy on gun crime before 2004.

After reading the sensational headline, I ran to the street and searched in the gutters. Alas, the new Glock I wanted was not there.

Dogs and cats living together! Homos gunning down each other in the street due to serial infidelity! This madness must stop!

This can't be -- everybody knows gun-control laws stop criminals from owning weapons.

Uhhhh, if the streets were overflowing with guns. Homicides would be DOWN from the prior year. But considering that the city/county government there is moving to ban ALL guns, they are pretty much just telling the gangs that they are surrendering.

And if anybody saw the piece on Brit Hume about the USS Iowa being docked in the SF bay harbor as a museum and the SF City Council blocking it because the Iowa was a symbol of Iraq and sexual discrimination. The part that was even more disgusting was that the USS Iowa sponsors offered to create a museum for queer and cross dressing sailors in history and a "Peace" conference annually to offset the horror of having an historic ship which protected this country for 40 years being in their view.

Stop the Criminals! The headlines should read:
Criminals on the Streets of SF! It's not the guns its the criminals.
Stop the criminals and the violence will stop.

Darn. Too bad about your Glock not being there. Meanwhile, the article contains this line:

"In November, voters passed Proposition H that bans the sale, manufacture, distribution and possession of firearms in San Francisco."

San Francisco has been very, very "gun unfriendly" for a long time, and this proposition merely cements the certainty that only the scumbags in their town will have firearms. In other words, the idiotic liberals down there have sent the criminals a message that it's open season in San Francisco - nobody law-abiding will be able to interfere with their mayhem and murder.

overflowing with guns

The new mantra of the chosen ones. Canada, New York, Baltimore...should we keep track?...all overflowing with guns. Perhaps Katrina short-circuited the convulsionists. Look to hear this mantra repeated ad infinitum until Congress substantially effects legislation to stem the flow. In the meantime, repeat:

Senator, Representative, Governor fill-in-the-blank does not believe in a woman's right to choose...to defend herself from harm by keeping and bearing arms.

While some women believe there is freedom in baring arms, there are a few others that know there is greater freedom in bearing arms.

San Francisco overflowing with young criminals.

That would be a more accurate headline.

What is it about SF (and certain other Blue places) that they are overflowing with criminals? How many Red places are overflowing with criminals? Maybe we need to equalize the burden of this inequity the way the education problem was solved.

Busing

Why not bus the criminals from Blue areas to Red areas in the spirit of equality for all?

And he would be right!

High murder rate attributed to large supply of firearms

Solution: Get rid of firearms legally owned by responsible citizens. That'll work

Pass a law that allows law-abiding citizens to carry guns. Then the crimes will go down.

Yeah! And since all these thugs are buying these guns at the local sporting goods store, we need to SHUT IT DOWN!

YEAH!

Huh? Oh, they don't buy their guns at a sporting goods store?

Never mind...
