State Has Banned Concealed Weapons For 133 Years
UPDATED: 6:58 pm CST January 31, 2006
MADISON, Wis. -- The state Assembly failed to muster enough votes on Tuesday to override Gov. Jim Doyle's veto of the concealed carry bill.
The 64-34 vote means Wisconsin residents still won't be able to legally carry hidden guns and knives. The Assembly would have needed 66 votes to override the veto.
Two Democrats, state Reps. John Steinbrink and Terry Van Akkeren, changed their votes on the conceal carry issue -- both initially voted for the bill when it first passed the Assembly, but both voted against the override on Tuesday, WISC-TV reported.
Wisconsin is still one of only four states that prohibit concealed weapons. The override would have ended a 133-year ban on allowing Wisconsinites to carry concealed weapons.
The Senate voted to override the veto last week.
A two-thirds majority vote is required to override the governor's veto, so the focus of many Capitol watchers will be on just a few Assembly members whose votes will decide the bill's fate.
Under the bill, state residents who pass firearms training and get permits could carry concealed handguns, knives, billy clubs and electric shock weapons in most public places except for schools, taverns and police stations.
Wisconsin is one of four states that ban the carry of concealed weapons. Gun supporters and Republican legislators have been seeking to change that for years.
Bill sponsors said that it would deter crime and allow law-abiding citizens to defend themselves, their families and their property. Opponents said that the bill will only encourage gun violence and will leave people unsure of whether others around them are carrying hidden weapons.
One of several reasons that I no longer live in Wisconsin.
Liberals.
Crooked Gov.
High taxes.
Damn cold.
Our only hope is to get Doyle out of office this November.
Green '06!
Still fighting the libs, corrupt gov, high taxes and cold...actually been a relatively mild winter. We're very hopeful the corrupt Gov will be gone in November (or indicted before then) which will help with the high taxes. If not, hubby and I may be joining you in the exodus from this state! lol
DITTO!
A)Make sure Doyle doesn't reelected
B)Give John Steinbrink, and Terry Van Akkeren the Boot.
Durn. I thought you had this.
Wisconsin, Illinois, Nebraska and Kansas.
I believe the issue in Wisconsin and Illinois is keeping the brothers down on the big city plantations. I thought we fought a Civil War over this kind of scheisse.
Apparently, the Democrats who fled the South to Milwaukee, Chicago and other points north didn't get the memo.
This needs to be "accurized":
"Opponents lied, as they did in dozens of other states, that the bill will only encourage gun violence and will leave people unsure of whether others around them are carrying hidden weapons."
Yep...we should give Illinois everything south of Hwy21
and take back the UP..
It would be a win win for everyone...

Here are the two flippers. Voted for the bill but flipped on the override vote. Say hi to them. Both Dems
Walker in 06'.
I am starting to hate the state I live in even though I love the area I am from. (Ozaukee County)
Yah think? Of course, people here could actually mean people and not perps and punks, who can now continue their life of violence and pretty well know that most people are unarmed.
Better the Gov and ALL the Dems, Greens, and RINOs, some percentage of the independents and maybe a pretend Libertarian or two.
Then don't settle for shall issue, because to be required to apply for state permission and pay a tax is infringement < /still unsatisfied shall issue state resident beating dead horse >.
I believe that is probably the case in Nebraska, also, the blockage of their bill comes from Omaha.
My state makes me a felon for exercising my constitutional right to bear arms . . . . .I gotta get outta this state.
The concealed-carry bill was watered down big time. Lots of concessions to Doyle and gun control groups.
Scott Walker will be elected and a better concealed-carry bill will be passed.
