Oropeza To Propose Expansion Of Ban On Workplace Smoking [CA]

Common areas such as parking garages, elevators and restrooms would be added to the law under legislation to be introduced today.

SACRAMENTO -- California's landmark workplace smoking ban would be extended to parking garages and some other common areas not covered by the law under a measure expected to be introduced today by South Bay Assemblywoman Jenny Oropeza.

The legislation would outlaw smoking in public and private parking structures, elevators, lobbies, lounges, restrooms, stairwells and waiting areas, according to an Oropeza aide. Some of those areas were left out of the original legislation at the request of the state's lodging industry.

"There are a variety of smoking regulations in California, all with the goal of protecting public health," said Oropeza, D-Carson, in a prepared statement. "This bill is a common-sense addition to that effort."

The state's workplace smoking ban was passed and signed into law in 1994.

It covers most public and private buildings, including bars and restaurants, and has been credited with helping drive the state's adult smoking rate down to less than 16 percent, second only to Utah.

I didn't realize that California had any place left where smoking wasn't banned.

California steps up to the plate yet again to protect mouth-breathers from the ravages of second-hand smoke.

"and private parking structures,"

Which means it won't be limited to just covered parking garages, but parking 'lots' as well.

All the cigarette tax dollars that California smokers pay should be yanked from that state!  I'm sick of this BS.

"There are a variety of smoking regulations in California and the most important one is the collection of taxes due the state," said Oropeza in a rare display of honesty.

Another pathetic piece of legislation, written by another pathetic politician, aimed at removing the last vestiges of freedom in this country.
