Actually, he's a Chaldo-Assyrian. That's different from Roman Catholic...it's actually closer to E. Orthodox I believe. Correct me if I'm wrong.
He did meet with the pope in 2003 to try to appeal to the West and show that Iraq was interested in disarmament. Pope John Paul II told him Iraq should comply with the UN resolutions.
