IRVING, Texas -- The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission has taken its fight against drunken driving to a new level. TABC agents, along with Irving police, targeted 36 bars and clubs Friday, arresting some allegedly intoxicated patrons before they departed the businesses.
The officers and agents also kept watch on bartenders who might have over-served patrons.
Agents arrested 30 people Friday night. Most of the suspects now face charges of public intoxication.
The agents and Irving police officers traveled from bar to bar and worked undercover, according to an NBC 5 report.
The report also said that some agents shared tables with suspected drunken patrons. Some patrons were subjected to field sobriety tests inside bars.
Agents and officers said the operation represented an effort to reduce drunken driving.
Sgt. Chris Hamilton, of the TABC, said some inebriated bar patrons "end up killing themselves or someone else" after departing the businesses.
Slippery slope alert.
I'm aware some bars with high numbers of TABC complaints will be "targeted" in this way.
It's just a not-so-subtle way to tell the managers and owners of these high risk bars to quit selling beer to minors, to stop selling booze to already intoxicated customers, to let them know there have been too many police reports at their location, and to generally quit screwing up.
I bet you the owners of these bars clearly got the message.
Thanks for the ping!
"From your attitude it sounds as though you might find yourself on their target list as you never know who lurks here."
Oh well.

Nice take.
A public restroom is, by definition, public. Do I infer correctly that the next logical step will be to arrest people for exposing themselves in public if they use a public restroom?
The people need to have each and every office holder in that community voted the hell out of office. I only wish the people enforcing this in bars the worst. The police are bad enough out on the road.
"The police are bad enough out on the road."
Tell me about it. Last nite cops were circling like sharks in a feeding frenzy everywhere anyone went. St Patty's day and all. Still, I had to send my daughter out for milk, yepper, she got pulled on the way, officer said she was swerving.
Now you know, if one had to be truly drunk driving they wouldn't need that many sharks in a feeding frenzy since there are actually few such folks that are too drunk to drive. But since now they can haul you off for a couple of beers, they put millions of sharks out to feed upon the weak on holidays.
It's been that way for awhile now.
Add the facts that one cannot know how to coform one's behavior with the law, there is no defense, and there are no victims, and you have tyranny.
In my state, all you have to do is be within some proximity of a vehicle that you own and/or control.
I know somebody who hadn't actually driven in over six months (surgery problem) who was busted watching his grandkids wax his car in his own driveway. The keys were the ignition so the kids could listen to the radio. He was in a lawn chair in the front yard drinking a beer.
The watering hole in Reserve, NM (and a lot of other similar places, I suspect) is practically out of business due to this nonsense.
You might be having fun.

The last time I was called for jury duty, I let it be known that if the case involved undercover cops, unmarked police cars, roadblocks, no-knock raids, or raids under cover of darkness by Ninja-suited government employees, I would not allow any conviction.
Of course, I was dismissed.
Ya' beat me to that comment.
You forgot about the firearms on the premises.
Reckless Endangerment, Negligent Use of a Deadly Weapon.
Booze and firearms in close proximity to each other in this state is Negligent Use.
