GOP Nears Deal on Immigration

Senate Republicans reached agreement last night on a compromise immigration measure that they believe will garner enough bipartisan support to break through a parliamentary impasse that has stymied progress on a high-stakes border security bill for two weeks.

Under the agreement, the Senate would allow undocumented workers a path to lawful employment and citizenship if they could prove -- through work stubs, utility bills or other documents -- that they have been in the country for five years. To attain citizenship, those immigrants would have to pay a $2,000 penalty, back taxes, learn English, undergo a criminal background check and remain working for 11 years.

Those who have been here a shorter time would have to return to one of 16 designated ports of entry, such as El Paso, Tex., and apply for a new form of temporary work visa for low-skilled and unskilled workers.

its because of low birth rates amongst americans, and abortions - that we got into this mess to begin with.

I have het to hear any politician say we need illegals because there are not enough Americans to fill jobs. You may have given the President a new excuse.

They won't get many takers. Why would any illegal with over five years here pay a $2,000 penalty, back taxes, learn English, undergo a criminal background check and remain working for 11 years" when they can stay in the shadows and work without paying taxes or disclosing their whereabouts to the USG?

Or "those [wth less than five years] who have been here a shorter time would have to return to one of 16 designated ports of entry, such as El Paso, Tex., and apply for a new form of temporary work visa for low-skilled and unskilled workers." How would they even know is their application would be approved?

All of this is meaningless without any enforcement. What happens to those who don't comply? Therein lies the fallacy.

The entire Republican senate caucus couldn't produce a complete set of gonads among them. Man, those FBI files that the Arky Trash had around the White House for all those years must have had some freakin' radioactive information about Republican senators. I've suspected that a few of 'em have some sexual, uh, preferences that they'd just as soon didn't get out....

What did we get out of the deal?

1. A Roman catholic nation.

2. Subsequent corruption.

3. Massive medical insurance premiums.

4. Severe alcohol-related problems.

5. Housing shortage and very high housing prices.

6. Dropping wages.

7. Eventual political turmoil resulting in a totalitarian state.

8. Increased drug trafficking and related crime.

9. Major linguistic changes (English disappears, Spanish becomes dominant)

10. Balkanization of the U.S.

11. Diseases from unchecked illegal immigrants (i.e. TB, whooping cough, mumps, etc.)

12. Dropping educational level as language mixture, lack of strict values, overcrowding, apathy and desire of higher ups for populace to remain ignorant and more easily controlled -- cheaper to hire.

A whole industry has developed for the purpose of providing illegals with phony documents. Pay stubs won't be a problem.

not illegals.

but legal immigration - yes, demographically we do need that - and the effects of abortion over the last 30 years is a big reason why.

If the Senate somehow manages to get this passed into law, I say we begin a true grassroots campaign to repeal the 17th Amendment.

Broken the law for five years, and getting quite a nice reward, must be nice. Of course, American citizenship doesn't mean as much as it used to, so me worry - heck no! All is good in this land of peace and prosperity for all illegal aliens and their corporate sponsors and excessive taxation for middle class types. *slurp*

the illegals will do whatever their employers are steered toward. that's they key, change the behavior of the employers - and you dictate what happens to the illegals.

You seem to think that Hispanics are unassimilatable diseased drunks into the drug trade, who despite low wages will drive up housing prices, and are at once hostile to democratic values, and are Catholic bots to boot, despite all of the above character flaws. Some might think your post was a bit of a mouthful. Some might even view it as a verbal cartoon.

"I could live with some kind of compromise - but look at these particulars - is anyone incentivized to leave? suppose no one shows up in El Paso to be requalified as a guest worker, what do we do?"

No, there is no incentive to leave. The proposed legislation is a spit in the face to every legal immigrant and every native born American.

The $2000 fine will be struck down in court using similar arguments to a poll tax. Either that or there will be an economic hardship provision that will exclude 95% from having to pay.

The back taxes collected on past wages will be negligible as most will say they just did a few odd jobs for cash.

The 5-year paper trail is easily forged.

No provisions for enforcement or tightening of the border.

This is the kind of legislation produced when cowards conspire.

Because that is the real reason. Without immigration, legal and illegal, the US would have a declining population like most of Europe and Japan. With an unemployment rate of 4.7%, which really is full employment, we still have plenty of jobs that need to be filled.

At the peak of the Great Wave of immigration in 1910, the number of immigrants living in the U.S. was less than half of what it is today, though the percentage of the population was slightly higher. The annual arrival of 1.5 million legal and illegal immigrants, coupled with 750,000 annual births to immigrant women, is the determinate factor— or three-fourths— of all U.S. population growth.

I am so tired of these idiots pandering to minority special interest groups. What about the majority AMERICAN CITIZEN TAXPAYER?

Close down the damn border!

If they want to do something for their damn precious corporations, give them a tax credit for abolishing 'Press 1 for English' and 'Press 2 for Spanish'.
