Senate Republicans reached agreement last night on a compromise immigration measure that they believe will garner enough bipartisan support to break through a parliamentary impasse that has stymied progress on a high-stakes border security bill for two weeks.
Under the agreement, the Senate would allow undocumented workers a path to lawful employment and citizenship if they could prove -- through work stubs, utility bills or other documents -- that they have been in the country for five years. To attain citizenship, those immigrants would have to pay a $2,000 penalty, back taxes, learn English, undergo a criminal background check and remain working for 11 years.
Those who have been here a shorter time would have to return to one of 16 designated ports of entry, such as El Paso, Tex., and apply for a new form of temporary work visa for low-skilled and unskilled workers.

Backstabbers!
Tancredo for President!
The 34.24 million immigrants (legal and illegal) now living in the country is the highest number ever recorded in American history and a 4.3 million increase since 2000.
Of the 4.3 million growth, almost half, or two million, is estimated to be from illegal immigration.
The same data also show that in the years between 2000 and 2004 nearly 6.1 million new immigrants (legal and illegal) arrived from abroad. New arrivals are offset by deaths and return migration among the existing immigrant population so that the net total increased by 4.3 million.
Since 2000, 6.1 million new immigrants have arrived, compared to the 5.5 million who arrived between 1996 and 2000, during the economic expansion.
The record pace of immigration is so surprising because unemployment among immigrants increased from 4.4 to 6.1 percent and the total number unemployed grew by 43 percent.
In contrast to current immigration, evidence indicates that economic downturns in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries did have a very significant impact on immigration levels.
Immigrants now account for nearly 12 percent of the nations total population, the highest percentage in over 80 years.
The diversity of the immigrant population continues to decline, with the top country, Mexico, accounting for 31 percent of all immigrants in 2004, up from 28 percent in 2000, 22 percent in 1990, and 16 percent in 1980.
And from the reports on the MMP threads, the amnesty gold rush is on!!!
Now we're going to give special consideration to those who have managed to break the law the longest.
Maybe someone can explain to me how that computes.
Yes, and the reports from Border Patrol agents have been the same in the last few weeks.
Our very own Senators are enticing a whole new flood.
At the moment, there is nothing in the world to stop a billion people from crossing into the United States.
God, what idiots they are. Not to mention exactly what is going to stop the invasion so that we don't have another 2 million by the end of the year? Instead of taking time to consider all the ramifications of the illegal immigration situation and how to solve it, they are in a big hurry to pass it right away. What I want to know is how exactly do we start impeachment proceedings against them? I'm sick of these treasonous bastards ignoring the will of the American CITIZENS to pander to ILLEGALS who wave the Mexican flag and plot to take Mexico back again. IF we let them get away with this, it's only a matter of time before they shred the rest of the Constitution!!!! They have proved that they are incompetent and unable to lead our country according to laws set forth in the Constitution, and I say it's time for them to go.
Insanity!
Total insanity.
And that's exactly what one illegal said to a FOX reporter just this past week....that's why he said he was coming in.
And just how is this to be enforced as compared to actual deportation? ....I've been told by hundreds that it was economically and physically impossible.
I do not like amnesty, but if this is what the bill will look like, it is dishonest. Why not be honest and say, "No, there will be no amnesty" instead of giving them a set of hurdles so high they can't jump over it?
I think you are right. There will be very few illegals willing to fulfill the obligations to become legal. If they are willing to honestly meet all the requirements I have no problem with it or with them.
And the 2 grand is not even up front, am pretty sure that it is $1000. now and $1000. in 6 years. I will have to read the new proposal.
Let's have a filibuster! No deal is better than any deal!
I keep reading that Mexicans are known to carry large wads of money. We don't have to treat them as peniless. A banker in AK found out they might have $20,000 saved and he started writing mortgages. So make them pay for medical care, for a start.
There were rules something like this with the last amnesty, and yet three times as many as they expected were able to qualify. I think many used false documents to prove they had been here the required time.
Many illegals that were here then did not even sign up for amnesty because they knew they couldn't pass the criminal records check, or other requirements; yet they simply remained here anyway.
After the last amnesty was passed; many, many more illegals poured across the border expecting that they could either fake their way to amnesty or that the US would do amnesty again. Enforcement that was promised after the last amnesty never happened either which is why we have the mess we have now.
I don't trust the government to enforce the laws this time either so I really think this will do nothing whatsoever to help the situation and in fact will make it much, much worse.
The past experience with amnesty is one reason I have always said that we needed a major fence/barrier on the border and enforcement of current laws before we even considered a amnesty or guest worker program of any kind.
There is a rumor now spreading in Mexico that amnesty is already a done deal- and illegal traffic has been heavier the last two weeks in my area of the border. The rush is on.
Have you ever been to El Paso?
Seriously very, very few will actually go to El Paso, if anyone is deported over this, it would be from that group and those that don't pass the background check. Any illegal who even thinks they might get deported will not apply for amnesty or go to El Paso, they will simply continue to live here illegally.
If this passes, we will be a lot closer to Mexican War II.
I hope if Tancredo does not win the GOP nomination that he runs as a third party candidate!
The truth is any illegal who thinks there is a reason he/she may not qualify for amnesty will not apply or go to El Paso, they will just remain illegal as they are now. If you really think about it some of them are the ones we need to know about or deport the worst. For example, any illegal who knows he/she won't pass the background check will not apply.
This is simply a joke, a very dangerous joke for the American people but it is a joke.
I've been a conservative and voted Republican ever since I could vote. But if the GOP's proposals, as they stand, go through, the party can kiss my vote goodbye.
Immigration is a critical national issue that will determine whether this country's culture, heritage and very existence will survive or be obliterated.
The worth of a nation is the worth of its people.
