How to make Confucian communists squirm

Easy when you know how HUANG YIXIN and Wei Wei, two students at the Guangzhou College of Fine Arts, were hanging around their dormitory last summer and decided—as one does—to turn on their webcam, put on their Houston-Rockets jerseys and lip-synch a few of their favourite songs by the Backstreet Boys. They uploaded the clips to Google Video, a free website full of such stuff. Their grimaces are over the top, self-consciously ludicrous. And they became famous almost instantly.

Astonishingly famous. Almost every Chinese internet user under a certain age has seen the “Back Dormitory Boys”, as they are now called. Web forums discuss their private lives. National radio and television shows have hosted them. Even their roommate, just visible in the background playing computer games, gets celebrity treatment.

Thanks for the link... That video is funny and for the first time I was able to enjoy that song. I'm hoping that as the Chinese young people become more exposed to the world it will seal the fate of that commie gov't. It may take a generation, but we have patience too

In the next 5-15 years, there will be revolutions that make the democratization at the end of the Cold War seem tame in comparasion. We are talking about Chinese Perestroika, Russian Perestroika round 2, the fall of socialism in Latin America (Give it time, it will fail) and the fall of islamofascism. This is why the governments in question are arming so much. They know that they have only one shot at us and then it is over (if it fails).

I agree with you completely, and admire a "fellow traveler" with such optimism for the future. Within our life time, I have confidence, humanity to shrug the chains of opression. Freedom is the natural state of man and GW Bush will become revered like Regan. Like all revolutionaries GW Bush pays the price in the short term, while history will judge the long term.

The thing is is that the US needs to remain strong, capible, and efficient to make sure that the second collapse of communism/islamofascism happens. If we weaken or lose our resolve, democracy will collapse.
