Jackson (MS.) Business Raided By Immigration Agents
WLBT 3 ^ | 4-19-06 | By Marsha Thompson

Posted on 04/20/2006 4:15:15 AM PDT by WKB

Federal agents raided a west Jackson business Wednesday morning. It was part of a nationwide crackdown on suspected illegal immigrants. While politicians continue to debate immigration reform, so-called "ICE" agents launched the crackdown on undocumented workers. Surprise raids were carried out at a number of 'IFCO' businesses. One bust was right here in Jackson.

The well-organized early morning crackdown by "ICE" agents took place in several locations. Among them, Houston, Texas, Albany, New York, Portland, Oregon and Jackson, Mississippi.

Agents arrested suspected illegal immigrants working for 'IFCO Systems' based in Houston, Texas.

One man whose brother was taken into custody had said, "This thing is not no good man. We need work."

Agents checked paperwork and loaded suspected illegal immigrants onto a Department of Homeland Security bus.

The very same scene unfolded at the company's IFCO Systems Mississippi warehouse. The business is located at the west Jackson Industrial park off Boling Street.

A federal customs agent in New Orleans told WLBT News the raid was part of an on-going "ICE" work-site investigation. He refused to elaborate on how many people were detained or arrested and so did the general manager at Jackson's IFCO plant. The massive warehouse was vacant... no one was around. Upstairs in an IFCO office, we asked the manager, Brian Lorenz, how many people were busted. He had no comment.

A hand full of arrest warrants were still on Lorenz's desk. Federal agents aren't saying much about the raids, but government officials do say indictments are expected against IFCO executives who are accused of hiring the undocumented workers.

WLBT was unable to contact IFCO systems headquarters in Houston for comment.

Thursday, "ICE" officials plan to unveil what it calls a "comprehensive immigration enforcement strategy for the nation's interior."

I will not believe it unless the chicken plants and chicken farms are raided around Hope, AR.

My first thought when reading this was IFCO missed a payment (sorry contribution) to the right congress critter. I will think this is all show until I see it go on for a few months straight.

Thanks, I'll take a look at it. Of course it is easy to say and increase in enforcement is because there's an increase in encrouchment... there is also an increase in population. Anyway I prefer to look at numbers rather than make judgements based on the number of Mexicans I see at the Home Depot. I do however suspect that I'd better learn Spanish fast if I am going to assimilate. ;-)

It is puzzling to me that the illegals can march in the streets by the hundreds of thousands, yet cannot work without fear of being caught and deported. Seems a doubble standard.

" ...Like left out words and misspelled words. Then "The Spell\Grammar Check Police" come and haul you away."

I usually run spell checker. I'm kind of a stickler at that. But when the system stalled I should have just backed out after copying what I typed, then refreshed my screen to see if it took. I wasn't thinking...too early I guess.

Anyway, thanks for the ping.

Absolutely.

I'd mow the neighbor's lawn on Saturday morning and that was my money for Saturday afternoon at the movie matinee.

congress critter

You are much to kind in your characterization of our elected representatives. They are "political whores," although if it makes you feel better we'll call the Republicans in Congress "Political Prostitutes."

What you may also find interesting is that Mexican businesses are taking over our corporations, for example Verizon was bought by a Mexican billionaire.

They are sending their people in a mass exodus and buying our corp does that make you a little nervous?

Why can anyone with money from any country buy our corporations?

For the same reason anyone with money can buy "their" corporations. Is there really such a think as "our" and "their" corporations any more? Is a Chevy really an American car? The parts are made everywhere and some are assembled in foreign countries. On the other hand many Toyotas are assembled here in America. My oh my, what's a patriot to do?

You have a good point.

Not long ago they chose the politically correct target of going after cleaning and construction contractors working for the evil Walmart. But there were never widespread raids.

On the other hand it might be in our best interest to try and show support for these raids and the people performing them however we can.

I think I'll send a few emails to my representatives in support of these raids and the men and women performing them. It doesn't seem like it's often that I contact my representatives with anything positive to say. Maybe it will surprise them enough to listen for once.

Pretty much proves congress need do nothing. The executive branch just needs to enforce existing law and SEAL THE BORDER. When the risk for hiring an illegal goes up, the employers will stop employing them and the invasion will stop.

You have a very good point. Congress does need to allocate resources to seal the border. Money for fences, sensors, UAVs, agents, more fencing, access roads, even more fencing.

However, we don't really need comprehensive reform of immigration laws, we need for the laws to be enforced.

We need to get this out of the senate judiciary committee where Specter will make sure anything that comes out of that committee undermines our immigration law.

The senate judiciary committee should be addressing our need for filling judicial vacancies and increasing the number of federal judicial positions to match the increases in case loads.

The judiciary committee isn't going to get the job done on illegal immigration, so this needs to be handled elsewhere. Our senators who are willing to address this need to keep attaching amendments to appropriations bills to provide funding for border security, especially for building real border fencing in critical areas, and constantly expanding it.

We need to learn the lesson the anti-gun lobby has taught us. If you can't get what you want all at once, get it a little at a time. Let's push for common sense border security measures. Let's push for common sense immigration enforcement. The real difference is that our plans really are common sense, while the gun control agenda isn't.

Is the administration just trying to placate the base to boost approval ratings?

Maybe, but my theory is that Bush is simply signaling to Congress that until they get off their arses and pass comprehensive reform, the current law will be enforced. Otherwise Congress will do what they always do ... nothing until after November.

Enforcing current law seems to go against the grain of what Bush has pushed in the past. Enforcement has been practically zero under Bush.

I can also see a scenario where the Republican machine has gone to Bush and pushed to have current laws enforced so the the congress critters don't have to go on record before the election. IMO, cracking down on illegal immigration (and tax evasion) will sweep the Republicans back into control.

Great question. The only conclusion I have been able to come up with is that maybe he actually believes in the one nation Mexico-USA-Canada concept. Why is he showing an interest in enforcing the law now might be because he realizes it is not politically doable right now. He does many things I don't understand.
