Hollywood wonders "What would Jesus direct?"

Long criticized by conservative Christians for profiting from violent or sexually graphic films that corrupt the young, Hollywood is starting to see there is money to be made catering to those critics.

"On Sunday, 43 percent of America was in church," Jonathan Bock, head of a movie marketing company that specializes in religious audiences, said at a panel discussion on "What Would Jesus Direct?" at the Tribeca Film Festival this week.

"For studios to not recognize that's an audience is like them saying, 'We're not marketing movies to men,"' Bock said.

• The Passion of The Christ sold bazillions of tickets
• The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe sold bazillions of tickets
• The Lord of The Rings sold bazillions of tickets
• Schindler's List sold bazillions of tickets
• Saving Private Ryan sold bazillions of tickets
• Star Wars always sells bazillions of tickets
• I'm predicting that United 93 will sell bazillions of tickets

What do these all have in common? Compelling stories. Good is good. Evil is evil. Moral relativism is gone. No gratuitous sex scenes. Christianity, America, Men and "Greedy Corporations" are not the Bad Guys. The Bad Guys are truly Bad Guys. Good triumphs over evil.

There. That wasn't so hard, was it?

If though he is not Jesus, I have been very impressed with the TV show DOC starring Billy Ray Cyrus. In many ways, he seemed to be like a modern day Jesus.

Winter said studios are looking for "projects" based on good stories likely to make entertaining movies, without being obvious efforts to proselytize and convert people.

Hmm. Why do I get the feeling that the "projects" they're looking for are like "The Da Vinci Code." Yeah, yeah...the "good story" is about the Last Supper, and Jesus' gift to humanity.

But the "project" there--why it's the secret message that one of the Apostles was really a woman! Oh, and Judas--he was really a good guy, but history hasn't been kind to him! Oh, and the Popes--yeah, they're all deceitful, power-grabbing murderers.

I don't trust directors like this.

Maybe, but you're more likely to find a car in a garage than you are in the living room. Ditto for Christians; you're more likely to find 'em in church than in a movie theater.
