House vote to back war puts Dems on defensive (Murtha: "we are the enemy")
Seattle Times ^ | June 17, 2006 | Jonathan Weisman and Charles Babington

The House on Friday voted 256-153 to support the military mission in Iraq

Forty-two Democrats bucked their leadership to join a virtually united Republican Party and declare that the United States must complete "the mission to create a sovereign, free, secure and united Iraq" without setting "an arbitrary date for the withdrawal or redeployment" of U.S. troops.

Three Republicans — Reps. Ron Paul of Texas, John Duncan Jr. of Tennessee and Jim Leach of Iowa — joined 149 Democrats and one independent to oppose the resolution. Three Democrats and two Republicans voted present in protest. Nineteen lawmakers did not vote.

"The American public deserves to hear how their elected leaders will respond to international terrorism and those enemies who seek to destroy our American way of life. Will we fight or will we retreat?" asked House Majority Leader John Boehner of Ohio. "Let me be clear: Those who say this is a war of choice are nothing more than wrong. This is a war of necessity."

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, of California, countered: "Republicans in Congress continue to try to mislead the American people by suggesting a link between the war in Iraq and the war on terror. They are distinct ... and efforts to portray one as part of the other are a disservice to the truth and to the men and women fighting in Baghdad, Kirkuk and Ramadi."

Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania, the hawkish Democrat who rocked Capitol Hill last year by calling for a rapid withdrawal of forces, said, "We've become the enemy. We've given a microphone to people like Zarqawi. We [war opponents] support the troops. It's the policy we don't support."

Dems are proving themselves to be LITERALLY TRAITORS -- no way could they be allowed to regain power.

Read Pelosi's and Murtha's statements above.

I would like for her to explain exactly how they are distinct, and not to some reporter but in a live debate. She's get slaughtered, and she knows it.

I would like to make Pelosi read all the documents that have been surfacing, proving the link between Saddam and terrorism, including Al Qaeda. How can she stand there and lie like that is beyond me.

And of course when MSM interviews her, they would never bring up the documents, and ask her how can she make those claims, in view of extensive proof of the opposite, that Saddam and terrorism are closely linked and the presence of terrorists in Iraq shows how important it it for us to win in Iraq and get rid of the terrorists.

Democrats are the greatest enemy of the US and the American eople -- we can fight Al Queda, but the Dems want to destroy us from the inside, and want us to unilaterally disarm and surrender to the terrorists.

Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania, the hawkish Democrat

So, 'cut and run' is now hawkish?

Dissappointed in Leach...Not surprised mind you, dissappointed though.
He's not my rep in this part of the state but I think it reflects badly on our State.

I agree, and this is why they're going to lose in November. Americans are not going to buy their lack of support for our country.

Whacking Zarqawi must have really hit a nerve with the RATS. They're not even bothering to hide the fact they're basing all their hopes for the midterms on our defeat in Iraq. I knew their hopes for winning back the House in November were slim, at best. But now they're admitting what the GOP was saying all along: "They're not serious about foreign policy or defense". Nancy can go ahead and cancel those new drapes for the Speaker's office.

I think you're right about Zarqawi being the final straw, this has been building up since the first Iraqi election. Things have been progressively getting better since then and I believe they've run out of phony excuses. They can say things are getting worse when in actuality they are getting better only so long.

We don't need documents. It is a fact that AQ is in Iraq today fighting us and Zarqawi was the Prince of AQ. Also, Iraq was on the State Department's list of state sponsors of terrorism for over a decade.

I think Zarqawi biting the big one, on the heels of the special election in California to replace Duke Cunningham, AND no Rove indictment just sent the RATS completely over the edge. That's three huge whammies in less than a week, and being as they're already unbalanced, this triple play just sent them right where they were already headed. This not only took immigration off the front pages, but it revitalized a demoralized GOP and its base. Finally, the whole William Jefferson fiasco didn't help them.

Don't be so hard on yourself and your fellow Democrats, Mr. Murtha.
