RICHMOND, Va. Democratic Senate candidate James Webb would have voted against setting a one-year timetable for withdrawing U-S troops from Iraq.
But he but accused Republicans today of lacking a plan for ending the military entanglement.
Webb, who is challenging incumbent Republican Senator George Allen, said it's not wise to set a hard deadline for withdrawing troops.
The Senate defeated a resolution yesterday by Massachusetts Senator John Kerry that would have begun a troop drawdown in Iraq this year and finish it by July 2007 was defeated in the Senate yesterday, 86-to-13.
Webb said this morning that he would have voted against Kerry's bill, saying he "didn't think it was a good proposal."
But Webb evaded a clear answer when asked if he would have supported a non-binding Democratic resolution urging Bush to begin withdrawing troops this year without setting a deadline for leaving Iraq. That measure also failed.
Allen supported Bush's Iraq plan in yesterday's vote. His campaign accused Webb today of contradicting himself on his Iraq position.
Wow this guy is deep, watch out George Allen - NOT!
What a pile of selfserving crap. Who in his right mind would snuggle up to a measure that went down 86 to 13? Puleeeeeeeeeeze!
Good News for Allen, I heard Allen is 10 points ahead of this guy in polls. Last week it was 5 points.
