What does "Ping" mean?

I see so many people asking to be put on the 'ping list', what does that mean?
I also see that you can be 'pinged' if something you are interested in is posted. Are you notified someway?

I wish I had save some the crap that has come my way over the years. You and me both. ;-) I come up against the "real winners" on a regular basis.
I'm beginning to think people need to pass a mandatory manners test in order to gain membership. An IQ test might not be a bad idea, either. The rudeness and low IQ tend to go hand-in-hand in most cases, though.
