What does "Ping" mean?

I see so many people asking to be put on the 'ping list', what does that mean?
I also see that you can be 'pinged' if something you are interested in is posted. Are you notified someway?

Yeah, I've met a few. Misery loves....misery. LOL. Ah, you mean the Gloom and Doom FReepers? They hate me because I present a positive outlook most of the time and it really annoys the heck out of 'em. Some have become quite unhinged.
Then,as the unhinging gets going real good, I annoy them more by becoming amused by that.
