I am curious how many other States have the new law of them taking blood from lab work for genetic research.
We went to the Docs (routine blood work done twice a year for personal health issues) office yesterday and had to sign a consent that we have been explained that under a new Oregon State law any blood drawn once tested for what ever the reason, I have thyroid levels checked, the left over blood will be sent to a lab for genetic testing.
Signing the form is your consent, they have a box to check to say NO I don't submit.
They claim the genetic testing is for anonymous medical research that may lead to cures.
I asked the gal isn't this like DNA mapping or is it going to a DNA databank?
Absolutely not was her response.
I had to sign the form but I did check the NO box. Any other Freepers in Oregon or other states having to sign this new law release form?
My son agreed to let his be taken.
Am I needing to remove tin foil cap or does anyone else think a DNA data base is being made or is it really just medical research.
Like the Privacy Law it is not a choice to sign or not to get private medical care the State requires a signature.
I don't know about the tin foil, but whenever anybody tells you, "Of course this is all private, we'd never dream of giving your (fill in the blank) to anyone else!" run for the hills....
I received the same form from Kaiser. I live in the People's Republic of Portland. I was appalled and denied Kaiser the right to use any genetic samples from me. You definitely should refuse, also.
I did.
It would seem that if the blood is being used for genuine testing that other information would be needed about the patient than just a sample could provide. Thing like medical history or medication taken, etc. A blood sample says a lot but it does not tell everything. Does this mean then that if one signs to have their left over blood used for testing they are also signing to have their medical record examined by who ever is doing the research?

I think everyone should refuse to allow their blood to be taken for 'genetic testing'. That would bring the roaches out of the woodwork -- they'll pass a new law saying consent isn't required, they'll just take your blood and do whatever they want with it.
