Haneda halts operations for 2 hours after worker crossed runway
(Kyodo) _ Tokyo's Haneda airport suspended flight arrivals and departures for about two hours on Saturday morning after its infrared ray sensor system detected a person crossing a runway without permission, who turned out to be a worker, airport officials said. The incident has caused delays of up to nearly two hours in 14 flights departing and arriving at the airport as of 7:30 a.m. they said.
The system sensed an object at around 4 a.m. around the most seaward runway. A security camera showed someone crossing the runway and followed the person but then lost sight of them.
The Haneda airport office of the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry closed the runway for about two hours from around 4:30 a.m. pending the whereabouts of the person, who was a 22-year-old ground control approach worker at an affiliate of All Nippon Airways Co.
The airport's other two runways were closed from late Friday night to Saturday morning for construction work.
The office is questioning the man about why he crossed the runway without permission.
Ping!
Thanks for the ping.
It's a strange story. Haneda spends a good bit of money for good security, but then they hire this worker.
