Governor tells party she will seek a second term (Blanco)

BATON ROUGE -- Gov. Kathleen Blanco told officials of the state Democratic Party on Saturday she will seek a second term as governor next year so she can continue to oversee the rebuilding of the hurricane-ravaged state.

"I am not going to quit; I am going to lead the battle," Blanco said at the regular meeting of the Democratic State Central Committee, the governing arm of the state party she leads.

Although she has said before she intends to run, Saturday's remarks are a sign of just how serious Blanco is about re-election and may indicate she is trying to pre-empt other major Democrats from jumping in the race.

"I am determined we are going to restore, rebuild and recover in Louisiana," Blanco said. "I am definitely planning to run again."

"Get out your checkbooks and write her a check," state Democratic Party Chairman Chris Whittington said as Blanco received a standing ovation.

Agriculture-Forestry Commissioner Bob Odom, who is influential in state Democratic Party politics, said in February he was unsure whether Blanco could keep the governor's mansion for the party, because of her low poll numbers at the time.

He suggested that ex-U.S. Sen. John Breaux, a centrist Democrat, may be recruited for the job.

Breaux, a Washington, lobbyist, said it is too early to talk about the governor's race.

As recently as last month, Odom said he did not know who he will back for governor in 2007. Odom has had a rocky relationship with Blanco since she helped block his initiative for an $85 million sugar syrup mill in Bunkie last year.

But will she cry if she loses?

God bless her and God help the Pelican State. Heck, half of the "Duo of Destruction" has been reelected, can't get much worse. Besides there is SERIOUS money to be stolen with all the money flowing into the state.

She can seek it, but I doubt she'll find it.

Which is the reason Mitch Landreau may throw his name in the hat!

The idiots in NOLA already reelected "Chocolate City" Nagin; why wouldn't Blanco expect to win another term? Apparently thundering, criminally negligent incompetence and eternal evasion of responsibility make one quite reelectable down in Louisiana.

Actually, no I am not kidding. I don't live in Louisiana so I don't know the full story about the situation there. I know she did not do to well during Katrina.

Recently, she signed a bill banning abortion and that is why I like her.

Admitedly, Nagin's election total dropped from 58% the first time to 52% this time, so Blanco, having only won 52%-48% in 2003, doesn't have as much breathing room.

Nola didn't have a choice in the last election that almost wasn't!

Nutjob, or Plantation owner. They choose nutjob!

It looks like similar choices are being offered by the Dims, dimwit or plantation owner.

Is Bobby J running again? I pray he is!

What you don't understand is that it was better to have Nagin and stop what would be a powerful re-election possiblility of Mary Landrieu. No one wanted that, so wouldn't you rather have Nagin A Mayor of New Orleans and a Republican Senator in the near future? NO ONE WANTED MITCH LANDRIEU to be the Mayor of the most fraudulent voter stealing precincts in the nation.

ROFLMAO!!!

I can't imagine that Blanco can be reelected. I don't even think she'll make it out of the primary.

One little thing that helps Blanco is that voters don't like to admit that they were previously wrong.
