A federal program paying rent for an estimated 330 "Katrina" families in Austin ends today, after being extended several times since February. The program, run locally by the City of Austin, has foot the bill for almost 2,000 families over the past year.
"The deadlines have continued to be extended, and we have not been notified of an extension of the deadline for the "403" program for another month, so we're anticipating that the program actually ends today," the city's Paul Hilgers says.
Hilgers says FEMA has contacted those families to tell them the free rent program is ending and to let them know what their options are. Many, he says, are still eligible for direct FEMA assistance.
Halleluia! Let's hope Houston's NO escapees are also finally kicked off the Katrina gravy train. There ought to be a six-month limit on all disaster payments for rent in the future. This encouragement of dependency among the welfare class has been ridiculous. Ship them all back to LA immediately. Texas schools especially will appreciate it.
I imagine that Austin wasn't any different from other areas. The "Katrina victims" were only part of a scam to get our tax money. The real beneficiaries of this handout are the apartment owners. Rental for apartments, condos and other residential property paid for with tax money was quite a bit higher than the going rate. This was true in spite of the fact that there had been a lot of vacant rental property.
I agree with you on the school issue. Ever since they came, tensions have rose steadily and they spill over in to the streets and into the media news even though they never say that these kids were from LA.
The problem here is these NO people have started robbing and killing people here. Now what's going to happen with the money dried up and there is no plan to put these people elsewhere; since they don't want to work. A friend of mine was boxed in by 2 drivers of cars about 2 weeks ago off of Wilcrest. She did somehow manage to get away. However, another woman in the same area 2 weeks later was not so lucky. She was murdered and her car stolen. I don't see our great mayor Bill White or his cohorts doing a damn thing. No he is just like all the rest of the politicians. All hot air; no vision or plan; just his own petty self-interest agendas. And do they really care about the safety or well being of the people. Apparently not. It's time to sweep these people out with the rest of the trash.
Hmmm I wonder if a lot of them will become squatters. The apartment owners shan't be too happy about that.
with all the school fights and the gang rapes and the shootings in the montrose and heights areas, it is geting downright nasty. I am glad I moved from Houston last year.
I will say 90% of them will.
Most of them have had handouts all their lives. when that gets taken from them, they will run around like chickens with their heads cut off, just like they were doing in N.O
It is a frightening situation here. If those freeloaders have not found a job after a year, they never will, because they won't. My neighborhood might as well be Bagdad.
Now we have to hear the drive-by-media cry about this.
THEY NeVER WILL.
You are absolutely correct.
