I've read Fay Weldon's books. lol. Let me supply the translation: Fake it only when you need to get something from the guy. Find a lover on the side.
Between the lines, she's saying that finding a true "soul" mate in a man, husband and lover, are incompatible for women. So stop trying to alienate half of the voting population who actually bother to pay attention and vote.
