This is Texas. What permits?
In fact, the only thing he might get in trouble over (and that would only be with his friends) is that he *didn't* hit his target - but he'll probably get away with explaining that he had an AK, which is about as accurate as a Nerf gun. His friends might still razz him about it, though.

(Overwhelmingly superior firepower and the willingness to use it is the only proven peace solution.)

As an owner of an AK, no one is quicker to recognize their limitations than me, but I'd like to relate a story. By the time I broke in the barrel on my AK, barrel heat would cause the second 10 shots to hit anywhere in a pie plate at about 100 yards and no better. But I took some copper solvent and gave that barrel the scrubbing of a lifetime... at least 20 passes, with the solvent setting in the barrel for 20 minutes or so between each pass. Eventually, the patches started coming out clean. The next 10 shots from that barrel were in a three inch group at 100 yards, from a sitting position.
The sighting picture is a mess, but you put a low power scope on that thing and it will hit what you need it to. It will never match an AR, but it will go bang every time and meet my personal minimum accuracy requirements. You can hit what you need to with it.

As far as AK accuracy goes, if it is an older AK, accuracy sucks. If it is a more modern clone or model, it is much better in the accuracy department.

but he'll probably get away with explaining that he had an AK, which is about as accurate as a Nerf gun I have one of these and the accuracy is better than I am. Some report 2" groups with these at 100 yards. Now, since I am a civilian (now), I would hate to have to explain how I popped a bad guy at 100 yards in fear of my life.
It is stamped "Las Vegas, NV" and made by Arsenal for $800. This rifle does something that no present AR can - fire 122 grain 30 caliber projectiles at $150/1000 rounds. I know of at least 1 AR in 308 now, but I couldn't afford to feed one of those.
