Republican had controlled the Governor's mansion for over 10 years, and the National Republicans were in trouble after the Watergate Scandal. The Republicans would go on to lose a great many seats in Congress, and the Governor's Office of Massachusetts. Only four years later, the state would be in crisis, and the agony wouldn't end until 1990.
