This is a total vanity but I thought it was important, in the lead up to next Tuesday, to remind folks of what is really at stake.
Wednesday night, the hubby and I went to a Richard Thompson concert in NJ just outside NYC. I knew going in that it is going to be a crowd of Kumbaya singing, sandal wearing freaks....it looked like a unibomber convention.
But I love Richard (the most brilliant/talented artist I have heard in my life)and have learned to go to a happy place when politics come up (though he is no Dixie Chick....he keeps it close to the vest and works to not offend despite his own Lefty leanings).
So...I am waiting in line, faint from the overwhelming stench of Petuli and self-righteousness, searching this all-inclusive crowd of liberals for any signs of the diversity they are so proud of (none by the way....nothing but 100% white, middle class faces)...
The hubby goes searching for food and I am bored enough to ease drop on the conversations around me.
The couple in front of me (mid-forties) talks of the upcoming election....and I quote,
"Well you know Gary, a lot of people I talk to aren't very happy with Howard" she says.
Howard....hmmm...I am assuming her boss/friend/neighbor because she throws his name off in such a casual way."
"How so Betty?" he says
"Well....the truth is...a lot of us are just concerned that he doesn't really represent the party. He just doesn't seem to get the direction people want him to go. He may not have been a good choice to run the DNC"
Well, well..they are talking about the screamer himself...old Howard Dean. Interesting, I lull myself into thinking...these lefty wackos may FINALLY be getting it...Howard does not represent the party. He is a nut job.
"Well Betty...what do you mean?"
"Well Gary, most of the people I talk to feel that Howard is (okay...this is where you hold on to your hats/lunch/sanity)
..........that Howard is just TOO CONSERVATIVE TO RUN THE DNC"
Yes folks....its true....Howard Dean, according to these folks, is just too conservative to represent the left.
Why don't we all take some time to think about what it might mean if these folks get the edge next week....it should terrify us all.
I was able to sit down shortly after this exchange....head between my knees, breathing slowly into a brown paper bag...
So, for all of those conservatives who seem, at some level, alright with losing this election with the thought that it will somehow teach those naughty conservatives who don't tow the line a valuable lesson....think about what kind of pain can be inflicted while we are "learning" this lesson.
Don't hold your nose and vote GOP....do it with purpose because IT MATTERS!
This is what we are up against....be afraid, be very afraid.
I've seen Richard Thompson a number of times and agree both with your assessment of his talent...and of the crowd at his concerts.
Great account! Thanks for posting!
In 1998 when I came to FR, we had loads of people who thought anyone connected with the RNC was way too liberal. Some of their belief was based on the fact that the RNC did not embrace their favorite conspiracy.
"Petuli"
What's that sickening, petulant odor? Smells like leftists LOL! I like this better than the original spelling (patchouli).
Lol...spelling is not my strong suit even with the advent of spell check...I even screwed up the title! Eveing instead of evening....I do exactly what I tell my 13 year old not too...I rush!
'...it's a vincent black lightning, 1952' BUMP!!!
He was truly brilliant...played a few new songs (wonderful and boads well for a new album) and lots of old stuff...3 Fairport songs and a few from his Linda days that I have never heard him do...and I have seen him in excess of 20 times.
Crowd makes me ill, though....so I either wear a saucy shirt (as in Imagine no liberals)
Or make sure the Ronald Reagan tattoo is visable....
Oh, don't sweat it too hard, it's the internet. I actually enjoyed "Petuli" and think it qualifies as a "typso" because it's so apropos to the subject matter. Tax-chick, do you agree?
Excellent post. Thanks for the reminder.
Gesundheit.
That's not particularly scary. It's exactly that kind of thinking that is the Dems' biggest weakness. The further left they go, the more out-of-touch with the country they get.
This is consistent with the argument I give high school kids when we do GOTV outreach in our local high schools.
In the Republican party, the conservatives drive the party, but the electeds tend to be more moderate (Take Bush, Arnie...list goes on) While many conservatives get bothered by this, it does keep the party more balanced.
In the Democrat party, the liberals drive the party AND are the elected. This means the party will keep going further and further to the left.
I would put up with 10K stinkin hippies to enjoy an evening with Richard. His show here was over an hour away and on a work night (I do have a job). So no go.
He has a "new" album out BTW. Check out "1000 years of popular music." CD and DVD in one bundle. Superb; and he does "Oops I did it again" LOL.
Ah, the scent of patchouli...I confess that, while it's usually a sign that the political company is decidedly mixed, that scent is inextricably associated in my memory with a certain wavy-haired babe...the odor still takes me back.
[sigh]
I had my day with the "petulant" girls, too. It can be nice, if not used in excess, in lieu of a bath, lol. Peppery-sweet.
LOL!
