Former President George H.W. Bush took on Arab critics of his son Tuesday during a testy exchange at a leadership conference in the capital of this U.S. ally.
"My son is an honest man," Bush told members of the audience harshly criticized the current U.S. leader's foreign policy.
The oil-rich Persian Gulf used to be safe territory for former President Bush, who brought Arab leaders together in a coalition that drove Saddam Hussein's troops from Kuwait in 1991. But gratitude for the elder Bush, who served as president from 1989-93, was overshadowed at the conference by hostility toward his son, whose invasion of Iraq and support for Israel are deeply unpopular in the region.
"We do not respect your son. We do not respect what he's doing all over the world," a woman in the audience bluntly told Bush after his speech.
Bush, 82, appeared stunned as others in the audience whooped and whistled in approval.
A college student told Bush his belief that U.S. wars were aimed at opening markets for American companies and said globalization was contrived for America's benefit at the expense of the rest of the world. Bush was having none of it.
"I think that's weird and it's nuts," Bush said. "To suggest that everything we do is because we're hungry for money, I think that's crazy. I think you need to go back to school."
(snip)
"This son is not going to back away," Bush said, his voice quivering. "He's not going to change his view because some poll says this or some poll says that, or some heartfelt comments from the lady who feels deeply in her heart about something.

Poppa Bush just might want to look to his best buddie, Clinton.
Clinton is paid big $$$$$$$ to speak to these same people...and he gives a whole different "story" about President Bush, and why he is doing what he is doing..
Poppa Bush should NOT have been stunned at all....

As I've said before, there are large number of Americans who have gone (IMO) stark raving mad. I wouldn't be surprised if they celebrated if we got hit again, as long as George Bush or pretty much any republican was in the Whitehouse.

"Ungrateful Arab bastards."
Nothing new in that statement. They have always been that way.

Hey, you worthless moron, the only reason you're not being raped by Iraqi troops or Iranian "Revolutionary Guards" is due to the American soldiers and Marines you disrespect and the two Bush presidents you despise. You scumbags aren't worth a pile of camel dung.....

If loving and respecting your son and knowing he's doing the right thing is living in a 'dream world,' then I gladly join President Bush 41 in that world.
I feel the same way about my son, and I feel the same about his.

Such lovely people, aren't they, Valin? I'm surprised that most of them aren't institutionalized or imprisoned.....
(Though some of them do post on FR and blend right in with a few of 'our own'.........)

No.
Believing what he does about other populations is living in a "dream world". His son suffers from the same affliction. Hereditary I suppose.

Yes. I suppose optimism, courage, faith and tenacity could be inherited traits.
Then again, they may be environmental....... but I for one, am glad that the son has those qualities.
Anything less in a leader, and many more Americans would be dead right now.....
And his Dad knows that.

Bush II DID do a very good job in thwarting any future attacks on America up to this point. He orchestrated a fantastic military achievement in Iraq and Afghanistan.
He IS courageous, optimistic and faithful.
But I would replace tenacity with stubbornness. He was stubborn over Miers, Dubai and illegal aliens.
He is stubborn about his optimistic vision of democracy for an artificial sheikdom of savages whom he wants to drag screaming and kicking from the 7th century into the 21st century.
He is optimistic about the one world vision of Mexico and the United States he apparently sees and very few other Americans share.
There is a point where stubbornness and stupidly become asymptotic.

He was right about Dubai, he is wrong about illegals, but sincerely believes that his policy will solve the problem, and, no offense, but anyone who is still in a tiff about Miers needs therapy......
As for the 'one world' stuff........ I'm not into cults. They're dangerous. Be careful.

No problem. Sometimes I have my troll radar set too high and I miss the obvious.
But leave the dog alone for now. There'll probably be another time when she really needs a good kicking.... ;)

I think there are a lot of individuals who would disagree about your views no those subjects - except for the illegals, I'm not in a tiff about Miers. He lost, we won.
I pointed it out as an example of his stubborness.
I'm sure your a nice person.
Have a happy Thanksgiving.
