At this point I see the main issue with the father is he had a planned recon/scouting mission and was planning to return to their "camp" at 1:30pm. He never returned. That doesn't sound good and add to the fact that he left the road and traversed into a creek and ditch area.

I am not sure how rugged the terrain is there...but I can assume it is pretty tough.

I hope he was injured in a fall or something. He may have fallen into water as well.

According to the interview with his wife at the hospital he really didn't have good clothing to hike out in (specifically he was wearing tennis shoes).

Maybe he decided to keep going because he thought if he went back they would never be found. Hopefully he has found some type of shelter and they will find him alive.

Yikes I just re-read what I wrote...

I certainly didn't hope he was injured.

It should have said: I hope he wasn't injured in a fall...

Please accept my apology for my error.

"Do you hold out much hope for the father? What is the weather now?"

If he's not found today, no hope. It's just to rugged and
cold up there. Both he and his wife are fools. If you don't know the road, you should ask locals about the conditions because maps are flat, reality isn't.

It came across the AP. However the one location that has had the most up to date info has been:

http://www.jamesandkati.com/guestbook/index.php?entry=0

Also to find information that has been processed and written out in decent summary...I have been looking here:

Here is your reason! This is sounding more positive

from CNET:

Oregon State Lieutenant Gregg Hastings has confirmed that searchers found a pair of pants they believe James Kim left as a marker at the bottom of a ravine, where he is believed to have traveled on foot. Unconfirmed reports from local news stations say rescuers may also have found another of his personal items near the pants.

Rescue teams are currently searching for James in a 5-mile stretch of a narrow canyon a few miles from where the car was found, Josephine County Undersheriff Brian Anderson said at a press conference Tuesday, adding that "it is a very rugged, remote area; the teams are having some difficulty because of the terrain and conditions."

It probably is a very good sign. I think he left the pants as a marker to his position. He would have to have control of his situation and warmth to make a decision like that.

He probably found a cave or some form of shelter and is able to manage his warmth needs. He has two lighters with him.

He may have also found something warm to wear or he could have had undergarmets that were warm (pink fluffy ones).

We all need to stay positive. This is going to have a good ending I hope.

I can see tearing a rag from a pair pants to leave as a marker. However, I still don't get leaving pants.

I do hope they find him and he is okay.

He had at least two pairs of pants with him. The pants they found are grey. He is wearing blue jeans.

Well OK then. Sounds good.

I haven't followed this story closely. Have they set some tracking dogs on the trail yet?

Terrain is too treacherous for horses or dogs. That is why they are not using them. It is really rough in there.
