I remember the guy from Utah who had his hand caught between rocks in a canyon for two days. Think this was back in 2004. Only after cutting off his hand with a pen knife (!) did he manage to come out alive. I guess you also have to make a judgement call about your situation.

Have you seen the "Man Law" commercials? He's in a few of them, even though he doesn't drink.

1. He was hiking alone in a remote area (a completely different but just as serious a mistake).
2. If he'd stayed with his car, he wouldn't have been down there hiking alone in the canyon.
3. Shifting or climbing over large loose rocks while hiking alone is yet another serious mistake.
Lord knows he paid dearly for it.

I remember and I read his book about the incident. Very upbeat about his lot in life and feels comfortable about his decision. After all, had he not cut off his arm he would most likely have perished.

While the "stick with the car" is probably good advice most of
the time, I've read/heard of some cases where that was the ticket
for death. Whether fairly quickly due to injuries/weaknesses of
some of the party...or a slow death by deprivation or exposure.
While they show the truly extreme cases, the "I Shouldn't Be
Alive" series shows plenty of times when if someone hadn't hoofed
it for help, the whole party probably would have perished.
(and, on balance, some cases where the person going for help
was just d-mned lucky to be found after the main party is discovered
"back at the car")
But boy, oh boy...making that judgement call as to "sticking
together" or "going for help" is a tough mutha'!
