Just heard on CNN Headline News he was found. Rescue personal saw flashing object and found him. No word of his condition.
LOL...you may not agree with Sir Gawain but I am sure even you'll accept that he has far more experience with posters and poster behavior on FR than either of us (and specifically, you).

You should see some of these comments!
Will you please post some good survival tips regarding the nursing mother/snow eating/general survival in snow?
I see we're moving right along from trashing the father who was trying to save his family to trashing those who very well may be praying for the victims of various tragedies they read about on FR. And who would those holier-than-thou types be, exactly?
All very good advice.
I am not sure if anyone has thought on how few people have any idea of how to survive and I lay the blame at a society that ridicuules the Boy Scouts, hunting, and do-it-yourself types in favor of "leave it to the experts".
It is as though there is a deliberate plot to make us all dependent.
WE are constantly reminded to let the trained people handle it,we are taught passivity, our kids are drugged for being too active and young boys are severely disciplined for merely having pocketknives.
I personally think every sane person ought to cary a good folding multi-tool as well.Having a screwdriver, pliers, and small knife can be very useful.
I wish Mr. Kim had lived to be with his family.

You are absolutely correct. Boys should be in the Boy Scouts for certain, not because it is a fun way to spend weekends and not because they build character, but because their eventual familie's lives may depend on the skills that they learn and practice in the outback.
I carry a Case 84A knife. A good knife with a really excellant saw blade. Man does that thing go through branches.
What's wrong with you?
Some of those comments (on that site) condemning Mr. Kim are as stupid as comments by a couple of posters here. It is always easy to perform a post-mortem of this tragedy from the comfort of an armchair. However, only God knows what the levels of desperation that drove this poor man to search for help after spending 7 days with his family.
From other accounts, it clearly appears that he even got rid of a second pair of pants in order to create a trail that led back to his family (in the car).
If he was selfish or stupid, as some claim, I don't know what to say.
Well bless your heart.....in the southern fashion. Where do you perfect people come from?
LOL....it was only after I lived in the south that I **really** understood the meaning of the phrase, "Bless your heart."
Oh the earthquake backpack goes without saying. Have that too. You understand the importance of water in desert climates. Heck, I also carry a compass in my console along with mag flashlights, big, small, all sizes.
Mom shouldn't eat the snow and neither should you because it chills the body core temperature.(my neighbors thought to avoid hauling water once and shoveled their cistern full of snow-it stayed frozen and alsp froze what water was already there!!!!)
Burn something and melt the snow in a cup or tin can .
If traveling in remote or isolated areas try to have the pocket blantes ,matches ans little candles in a baggie, some chocolate bars ,etc.
I would have tried burning any wood available but don't know if there was some near the Kims' car.It would seem one could find wood in a forest preserve and having once started a tire burning the fire kept fed with wood. Some damp wood added carefully could create a smoke column visible in calm but winds will disperse smoke.
Millions of today's American would do no better than Mr Kim and Many much worse.WE too often think ,because we are told by advertisers and experts, that a cell ophone is a substitute for preparedness. Every winter I see people traveling with nothing more than comfortable indoor attire entirely unready if the car heater quits or even the housecoat-clad person "just making a quick trip to the store".
He almost made it to a point where he would have been found much earlier. The route he took was a 4000' vertical drop over 5 miles from the road to the bottom of the Big Windy Creek gorge where it meets the Rogue River. 1/2 mile downriver from that confluence was a campsite with shelters next to a wide, open bar in the river floodplain, any clothing there would have been easily spotted from the air. He was found 1/2 mile from of the gorge bottom, so he made it 4.5 miles down the 5 mile slope and was within 1 mile of the shelter, where he would have been found Monday or maybe even Sunday.
Amazing! I have always believed that people, in general, are decent and can be expected to do the right thing.
However, some of these inhuman and cruel responses lead me to wonder if I am being overly optimistic in my (admittedly limited) understanding of human nature.
Unfortunately, I haven't been Blessed with the opportunity to live in the South. Family obligations force me to remain, miserably, in The People's Republic of Washington State, surrounded by Socialists and worse, as well as a disproportionate number of people who haven't a clue as to what Friendliness and Courtesy mean.
As a result, I'm a little unsure as to what you're driving at. Should I understand that "Bless your heart" in this context means something along the lines of "I'm far too polite to say 'go to Hell' or 'up yours' or 'How did you manage to get as old as you are, being as breathtakingly stupid as you are?', so I'll say this as a generic response that doesn't drag me down to such an uncouth level."?.
Just guessing here :-)
Two years in the military would go a long way to preparing Americans for survival situations. Had Mr. Kim been drafted and served a 2-year hitch he'd have been better trained to handle this problem. I feel for the family and my sincere sympathies and prayers go out to them.
Saw the news about Kim, before I got here. I am so saddened. I've been praying he'd be found alive. Lord have mercy.
Pretty good guess for a "yankee". :o)
That old broad, in all probability, was me. I am not brain dead, by the way, but sometimes I wish!
Modern media has won, and I now am somewhat cynical. Many people have tried to manipulate the media for personal gain. It is getting very hard to separate the wheat from the chaff!
I do tend to get sarcastic when I am very upset, as I was the other night when I posted about this story. I actually was hoping this was a bit staged so that I wouldn't have to think about the consequences of setting out on a trip like this with such young children, so unprepared.
I am not blaming them personally, as I was once young, invincible, and optimistic, thinking that nothing bad could happen to me.
If anything can be gained from this tragedy, I hope it encourages other young families to be a bit more prepared when heading out on an adventure.
The problem I see with the name-calling on this thread is that so many want to see the events that happen around us in "either-or" terms. If critical of the poor choices made, one becomes "heartless", and if sympathetic, one becomes "virtuous and caring".
One can be both, I think.. Bad things can and do happen to good people, through no fault of their own. But sometimes good people do risky things, and contribute to the bad things that happen to them. When this happens, wise people try to learn by the bad example, so as to avoid a similar catastrophe.
