New England has long been the center of cowardice and socialism in our country. Your "views" are nothing new. Bu bye.

Iraq crackdown on Shia stronghold

More US troops are being sent to improve Baghdad's security
An operation involving US-led forces is under way in Baghdad's Shia stronghold of Sadr City, the US military has said.
A spokesman for the military would not confirm or deny reports that hundreds of troops were taking part.

Meanwhile five people were detained in an early-morning raid by UK and Iraqi troops in the southern city of Basra.

The raids came as Iraqi PM Nouri Maliki said he was offering an olive branch to insurgents who accepted the language of reconciliation and dialogue.

Those who did not would fall foul of a security crackdown which would "cover every inch of Iraq", he said.

We present in our hand a green olive branch, and in the other hand we present the law ... Operation Imposing Law started in Baghdad, it will cover every inch of Iraq

Nouri Maliki
Iraqi prime minister

Mr Maliki has said he will reshuffle his cabinet within the next two weeks.

No details have been given, but reports quote unnamed officials as saying he is expected to dismiss all six ministers loyal to the Shia cleric, Moqtada Sadr, who has been criticised by the United States.

Mr Maliki said political consensus could only be achieved in Iraq once the country was stable.

"We do not need to implement security measures except against those who reject the language of reconciliation and dialogue, those who insist on restoring the past," he said.

"We present in our hand a green olive branch, and in the other hand we present the law ... Operation Imposing Law started in Baghdad, it will cover every inch of Iraq."

He did not specify whether insurgents who stopped fighting would be given an amnesty.

Torture claims

Shortly after Mr Maliki's announcement, US forces entered the Sadr City district of Baghdad, as they continued to implement a major new security plan.

The US has repeatedly said that one of the keys to improving security in Iraq is to tackle Shia militias, such as the Mehdi Army, controlled by Mr Sadr.

The Associated Press news agency reported that hundreds of troops were involved in the raid.

US and Iraqi troops conducted separate house-to-house raids in the western corner of the district.

They seized any weapons that were discovered, but have so far met no resistance.

In Basra, five people were held by British and Iraqi forces on suspicion of involvement in roadside bomb attacks against the multinational forces and Iraqi civilians, as well as kidnaps, torture and murder.

As a result of information obtained, Iraqi counter-intelligence forces then raided the National Iraqi Intelligence Agency headquarters, where "further evidence of significant criminal activity such as torture" was found and a number of prisoners released.

The BBC's Jim Muir in Baghdad says the agency is not the first to be involved in allegations of torture by Shia militias.

“The indication that we are getting is a lot of the really bad folks have gone into hiding,” Oclander said.

In other words, the problem is still there, and they will probably resurface to make trouble sometime in the future on their schedule.

It's no wonder they leisurely went to ground. We gave them plenty of warning and time to get out. Fighting our wars the Arab way is not going to win them for us. Instead, it will lose them for us. This is ominous as it signals we are not serious about killing the enemy, just mollifying him and not making anybody angry.

Political correctness will be the death of us all and will ultimately lose this war.

Political correctness will be the death of us all and will ultimately lose this war.

WWII was the last war we fought to win. We did whatever it took to win and after we had crushed our enemy then we were merciful, not during the conflict. In the Pacific theater in order to get prisoners to interrogate they had to give out 2 wks leave to soldiers who brought in prisoners. When the leave was no longer offered no prisoners were brought in. In order to end the war we dropped nuclear bombs, nobody made much of a ruckus out of it.

Now we have lawyers at all levels second guessing actions that were taken, or prosecuting soldiers if they didn't do something right.

Actually, that is not true at all. An insurgency depends entirely on popular support (popularity). Without it, the insurgency will fail. It is for this very reason that I believe we will be successful in Iraq; a populace coerced by insurgent violence will only support the insurgency for a limited time.

Yep, just like in Tora Bora - we waited around while tribal leaders negotiated, and we let the big fish get away. The whole WOT could have been so much different if we had fought seriously from the beginning.

Which means they'll lie low for the next 20 years. Works for me. At what point does lying low become defeated? I'll just go ahead and replace the word now. In the future, when considering the use of the phrase lying low, replaced with defeated.

The Surge is working. However, I hope none of you are thinking it will last beyond the length of time the Surge is taking place. It's a temporary fix, and the terrorists/insurgents know it. All we can hope for is that it entrenches enough IA and IPs (who aren't corrupt) to make a difference once troop levels return to normal.

The lack of violence in this Sadr City incursion isn't surprising either. Those were Stryker Soldiers that went in there. Hajis are terrified of Stryker Soldiers. They know we mean serious business wherever we go. It's pretty much the same wherever we go. The last people who tried to actively resist us on a large were in Najaf, and you can read about what happened to them.

That is where you are wrong.

I swear I wish you people would listen when the plan is described.

Get all hung up on US troop increase numbers, while being completely oblivious to the other HUGE (more important IMO) changes in the situation. Particularly the change in the RoE.

Also they are 'laying low' and can 'come back', but this time we have enough Iraqi troops to NEVER leave. They will state, dig in and establish themselves.

SO even when Sadr comes back or tries to reestablish, they will be better prepared to keep him down and in control.

You can see it in the story above where Malki is also trying to hurt him politically as well, while he hides in Iran.

Like another poster said.. they lie low, are effectively defeated , even if its only for now its still a win and can/will be taken advantage of if the plan it allowed to continue.

Yeah, perhaps you can tell me what the ROE changes are? I haven't been made aware of any, and I'm the end-user. So please fill me in, smart guy. Also, your notion that this is "troop increase" is stupid. Guys are being extended and already scheduled deployments are being moved up. There are no "extra troops" being sent in. And the terrorists can outwait us, make no mistake.
