Insurgent leader 'held' in Iraq

Iraqi forces captured al-Baghdadi in the Abu Ghraib area of the city

A key leader of an al-Qaeda linked insurgent group has been arrested in Iraq, according to media reports.

Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, the self-styled leader of the Sunni Arab group the Islamic State in Iraq, was captured in the Abu Ghraib district of Baghdad.

An Iraqi government official said Mr al-Baghdadi had been arrested after intelligence tip-offs.

He heads an umbrella group of Sunni insurgent movements fighting the Iraqi government and US troops in Iraq.

"He was captured this afternoon by Iraqi forces with several of his aides as a result of receiving intelligence tips," the government source told AFP news agency.

No other immediate confirmation of the report from official sources was available.

His group is believed to be behind a series of attacks in Iraq, including the kidnapping of at least 18 police officers last week who were subsequently killed.

Security sources said he was also among militants who stormed a prison near the northern city of Mosul, freeing some 140 prisoners.

It is amazing how ALL western Liberal media is giving us the same spin. Now that he's captured he is the leader of "an al-Qaeda linked insurgent group." Never mind that he and his follows said they are al-Qaeda lead - not merely "linked." Here's what Al Jazeera says:

Hundreds of supporters of the Mujahidin Shura Council, a group of Sunni fighters led by al-Qaeda in Iraq, took to the streets of Ramadi to announce that the city was joining a self-declared Islamic state in Iraq.

Hundreds of armed men marched through the capital of Anbar province as mosque loudspeakers broadcast a statement by the Mujahidin Shura Council.

Cars also formed convoys in a show of strength in an area revisited by US forces on a regular basis.

"We are from Mujahidin Shura Council and our amir is Abu Omar al-Baghdadi. God willing we will set the law of Sharia here and we will fight the Americans," said a man who identified himself as Abu Harith, a Mujahidin leader.

Hopefully we shall shortly read confirmed reports. The Iraqi still seem to have a way of carrying on after Baghdad Bob.

Of course we should not expect to much feeling from the little statue that remained on the stone shelf after the other 364 where tossed out and broken up. Frigen muslims have been had for some fifteen centuries and still don't have a clue.

Confirmation seems closer if Jihadists web sites are to be believed ( From the Long thread ):

BREAKING: Abu Omar al-Baghdadi Captured

**************************EXCERPT*****************************

He is indeed captured. Queda forums publishing rants and raves claiming otherwise, but a statement has been issued by the "Islamic State of Iraq" on the Hesbah forum confirming the capture.
