The 90 Percent Solution (Draconian Cuts in the name of "Global Warming")
Newsweek/MSNBC ^ | April 16, 2007 Edition | Jessica Bennett

Posted on 04/08/2007 10:43:48 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

One of the criticisms of Al Gore’s message on climate change is that he exaggerates the imminence of the threat—implying, for instance, that sea levels may rise more quickly than scientists feel comfortable saying. But a few people think Gore is actually sugarcoating the catastrophe predictions.

Most prominently, the renowned British scientist James Lovelock thinks that the world is already approaching a tipping point, beyond which temperature rise will run out of control and major ecosystems will collapse. The dying Amazon rainforest would begin releasing carbon, making things even hotter. The permafrost would melt, releasing carbon and causing sea levels to rise. Environmental writer George Monbiot has taken Lovelock’s pessimism and come up with a plan in "Heat: How to Stop the Planet from Burning" (South End Press). To avoid hitting the "critical threshold," he says, the world’s total carbon emissions must be reduced to 60 percent below current levels by 2030—a target that would require the developed world to reduce emissions by 90 percent (to compensate for growth in China, India and other developing countries). Monbiot’s plan: each nation would be allocated a carbon limit based on urban population and each individual an annual carbon allowance. Governments, meanwhile, would redesign transport systems, generate renewable electricity, build energy-saving homes and offices, and update the old ones. Appliances would be "smart" enough to know when to turn themselves off. And his most radical idea: airline travel would have to be scrapped. Monbiot spoke with NEWSWEEK’s Jessica Bennett on what needs to be done. Excerpts:

So these guys James Lovelock and George Monbiot think that Al Gore is "sugarcoating" Gore-bull warming? Just goes to show you that no matter how looney you are, there's always someone to the left of you!!

Has carbon ever blown up a bus in Israel?

Did carbon cause 9-11?

Is carbon killing dozens of people everyday in Iraq?

Does carbon behead people?

No, but neither does cancer.

I don't buy this guy's position, but there are plenty of non-violent threats to the world.

Monbiot is a raving, foaming at the mouth, mentally insane nutbag. Newsweek/MSNBC should be ashamed of themselves for playing along with his delusions. He needs professional treatment, not sympathetic pandering.

NEWSWEEK: Where do you come up with this 90 percent figure? George Monbiot: It’s not an exact science. So I pretty much pull a figure out of my butt knowing this would make my Socialist and Communist friends happy.

These guys are pretty much nutcases. We should all give up everything (inluding air travel, the lifeblood of a number of industries) so that Chinese and Indians can develop their economies !? He’s been hitting the crack pipe a bit too much lately I think.

"... require the developed world to reduce emissions by 90 percent (to compensate for growth in China, India and other developing countries)."

China is building a coal-fired generating plant every week for the next six years and they're going to be exempt?

I don't think you'll make much progress that way.

The Brits (and presumably the Continentals but most especially the Swedes) have all lost their collective minds over this fantasy of anthropogenic global warming. It provides a ready-made excuse for them to continue with their socialist nanny-states, to ignore the threat of Islamo-fascists, and whine while hiding behind the US military. Otherwise relatively intelligent but extremely cowardly, nanny-state fly all over everywhere to complain about how consumerism, reproduction and free-markets are destroying the world. They are really pathetic!

Lovelock is an extreme leftist who believes economic growth is destroying the planet. Not a “renouned scientist” anymore.

These guys appear to be making an all out push to establish their agenda immediately. Might have something to do with a realization that growing numbers of people are onto their BS.

Standard radical tactic. You send someone out with totally over-the-top demands so that the real objective -- in this case a carbon tax and a massive increase in government power --- does not sound so radical.

Meanwhile, this morning my dog farted. The GW police came and put him down. Tragic really. I only had one carbon credit left. Sparky used two with that fart.

Teh Dimorcatic congress should lead by example when it comes to global warming-they should pass legislation prohibiting the use of air conditioining in all federal buildings-including the US capitol. They should also require thermostats be set at 65 degrees in all federal building (including the capitol) during the winter. Given, that the US govt is the largest owner of buildings in the world it’s only fitting that the government lead by example.

"China is building a coal-fired generating plant every week for the next six years and they're going to be exempt?"

Here's some more on China and its coal.

"A global environmental catastrophe" is how geologist Glenn B. Stracher described the situation.

Stracher, of East Georgia College in Swainsboro, organized an international symposium on the topic at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

"This symposium is dedicated to disclosing the severity of the coal fires problem," Stracher said, noting that some of the fires have been burning for centuries with few people aware of the problem.

Concern and action is needed, he said, because of the environmental impact -- especially of mega-fires burning in India, China and elsewhere in Asia. One coal fire in northern China, for instance, is burning over an area more than 3,000 miles wide and almost 450 miles long.

The Chinese fires also make a big, hidden contribution to global warming through the greenhouse effect, scientists said. Each year they release 360 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, as much as all the cars and light trucks in the United States.

An awful lot of people think the US and the Industrialized West should reduce consumption. They thought this before the Global Warming business came along. The actions demanded if Global Warming is a reality are the very actions they have always advocated, so they accept Global Warming as a reality. It is their “Convenient Truth”.
