Millions of Dishwashers Recalled (Back to Mexico?)
WBAY ^ | 05/16/2007

Posted on 05/16/2007 1:29:26 PM PDT by Responsibility2nd

General Electric is recalling two-and-a-half million dishwashers because of a wiring problem that could cause a fire.

The recall includes GE dishwashers sold under the brands Eterna, GE, GE Profile, GE Monogram, Hotpoint, and Sears Kenmore. The brand name is printed on the dishwasher's front control panel. The dishwashers come in many colors or stainless steel.

They were sold through department and appliance stores between September 1997 through December 2001 for about $400.

GE received nearly 200 complaints of overheating, including 12 fires caused by the washers. There were 56 reports of property damage.

The problem: liquid rinse-aid can leak from the dispenser onto the internal wiring, which can cause a short circuit and overheating.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says consumers should immediately stop using the dishwashers and contact General Electric to arrange a free repair or a $150 to $300 rebate toward a new dishwasher. Call toll-free 1-877-607-6395 between 7 A.M. and 7 P.M. Monday through Saturday, or visit General Electric's web site.

Thanks for posting this. I have one of these and just got a service call scheduled through the GE website

You can enter your model and serial number and they will tell you if your machine qualifies.

Also, having suffered through the last recall forced upon GE and their fire producing dishwashers... which was a bigger recall, and the dishwashers were made in the US at the time... GE was a complete and total pain in the arse about sending this stupid 20 cent crimpon to fix the machine.

NEW YORK STATE
DEPARTMENT OF LAW
2000
ANNUAL REPORT
ELIOT SPITZER
ATTORNEY GENERAL

CONSUMER FRAUDS AND PROTECTION
Page 24
The Consumer Frauds and Protection Bureau prosecutes businesses and individuals engaged in
fraudulent, misleading, deceptive or illegal trade practices. The Bureau also mediates thousands
of complaints each year from individual consumers. As part of its mission, the Bureau provides
information to consumers and seeks to ensure a fair and vigorous marketplace. The Bureau also
drafts legislation, conducts studies and writes reports on emerging consumer problems and issues.
People v. General Electric Co.: The Bureau successfully sued GE for engaging in deceptive
practices following the recall of 3.1 million dishwashers that presented a fire hazard. In the recall,
GE had offered consumers who owned the hazardous dishwashers a rebate of between $75-$125
toward the purchase of a new GE dishwasher. GE told consumers that the dishwashers could not
be repaired because, among other reasons, the parts were no longer available. At the same time it
was telling consumers that the dishwashers could not be repaired, GE was sending repair kits,
consisting of inexpensive crimp-on connectors, to its commercial customers who owned the same
dishwashers. After the Attorney General’s lawsuit was filed, GE agreed to repair all the
dishwashers. In its decision on the lawsuit, the court ruled that GE had engaged in deceptive
practices in violation of New York law and ordered GE to make refunds to New York consumers
who purchased new dishwashers as a result of GE’s deception

Years ago, when Montgomery Wards was still in business, Mrs. R2 wanted a Maytag washer. We bought it at Wards.

Not less than a year later, it needed service. Wards shluffed me off to Maytag. Maytag shluffed me back to the Wards service center.

What I found out was that Maytag produced an inferior line of washers just for Wards.

Made no sense to me, since “MAYTAG” was all over the washer (not whatever the Wards inhouse brand was).

Needless to say I raised hell. But I did get it fixed.

(WHAT WAS Wards in house brand name anyway? Was it Signature?)

An interesting article on appliance quality from Samurai Appliance Repair Man and an exerpt:

http://fixitnow.com/wp/2005/02/15/is-there-a-washer-and-dryer-worth-buying/

“...other manufacturers seem to go out of their way to make it difficult for independent servicers to obtain technical service information on their products. GE is especially bad in this regard. Speaking of GE…

Avoid GE appliances and all GE brands. They charge a premium for their products yet their repair frequency is as much or more than other brands. And the repair will cost you more because GE parts can cost two to three times more than comparable parts for other brands; it’s not like they’re better parts, either– GE just charges more for ‘em. Why? ‘Cuz they can. Appliance techs often joke that GE stands for Greedy Electric. But, sadly, the real joke is on the schlumps who buy GE appliances.”

I bought a Samsung Silvercare front-loader set from Lowes a few months ago. These are the greatest washer/dryer set I ever owned. It even came with a free 15 inch LCD TV set.
