From the WaPo, word of the continuing GOP meltdown:
Senate Minority Whip Trent Lott (R-Miss.) said he has told the most virulent Republican opponents that he will not tolerate a raft of amendment votes designed simply to filibuster the measure, and he castigated his own party's senators for their vote switches.
"We're going to do this damned thing, and if we don't, I think we should dissolve the Congress and just go home," Lott fumed.
The sooner the Republican Senate caucus can find 41 votes to declare the bill beyond repair, the better of the GOP will be. The presidential ambitions of John McCain are smoldering as a result of the fire he started, and now the GOP's 49 seats look to take another major hit in the fall of '08.

Oh, great -- one of my pet peeves is bringing up FBI files on any and all topics -- and you post this stuff to me. And to suggest that there is something wierd going on with Lott's orientation is just stupid. Please do not ping me again, and loosen up on the tinfoil hat -- it's cutting off bloodflow to your brain.
All that being said, Trent is still wrong in this immigration bill and I support nothing that he has said and/or done in this regard.

He's a politician, that's what's wrong. Yes, we have to assume the "R" by his name stands for Republican...

disolve it, prevent any of them supporting amnesty from running again, and elect people who’ll put the American public ahead of La Raza and big business.

"We're going to do this damned thing, and if we don't, I think we should dissolve the Congress and just go home," Lott fumed. And there you have Trent Lott and the rest of the professional politician class in a nutshell. To them, what Congress does is much more important than the opinion of the voters or the effect on the Country.
Frankly, if Congress dissolved and went home, we would all be better off.

Thank you. For a detailed approach to the many things which should be considered on the subject of immigration, today, see:
Immigration & The American Future.
Unfortunately, few in Congress even want to discuss matters that may bring out the would-be thought police on the Left. Yet America's future depends upon a full, frank and open discussion of all essential aspects.

Maybe we should get a good solid conservative to run against him in his own district. This is a bunch of nitwitted nonsense.

"one of my pet peeves is bringing up FBI files on any and all topics... and loosen up on the tinfoil hat -- it's cutting off bloodflow to your brain." I kind of agree with you about the FBI files 'on any and all topics', that it's brought up too often. But when someone like Lott goes squish too often...well, the files were presumably swiped for a reason, and I would guess the Clinton Organization and associates finds them useful.
The positive side of this is that it reasonably raises the question of any turncoat/squish having been 'compromised' by the Clinton crowd with those files -- and, so, might cut down on the incidence of squish/treachery.
And I will try to not develop one of those tinfoil hats.

Um...for those of us too young and self-absorbed to remember, what file-swiping incident are you referring to? I assume it’s not the Berger theft, right?
